Literature days at the Weinwerk: Heinz Janisch brings back feelings of home!

The Literature Days at Weinwerk began on Friday, September 12, 2025, with an impressive shot at the big literary stage. Successful author Heinz Janisch opened the event with a reading moderated by Ö1 culture editor Christa Eder. This event, which is the largest literary event in Burgenland, brings together over twenty artists and cultural workers and offers an exciting program for literature enthusiasts. The organizer, the Pirol association under the direction of Karin Ivancsics, has put together a varied program that runs from Friday to Sunday and plays with themes from texts between yesterday, today and tomorrow.

A highlight of the opening speech was the presentation of Janisch's current play "The Wooden Tire - The Late Homecoming of Mr. Glück", which is based on his own book "Childhood in Lackenbach" and focuses on the return of a man to his home village. The musical accompaniment of the piece was provided by none other than Ferry Janoska, while the production was carried out by Peter Wagner and Valentina Himmelbauer. Janisch's remarkable work was also recognized with the Hans Christian Andersen Prize 2024 for his life's work.

Versatile programming

The Literature Days are more than just readings; they are a place for exchange and reflection. Authors such as Laura Freudenthaler with her work “Arson”, Petra Piuk with “Hotel Love” and Ana Marwan with the moving reading “Sei Erich” are expected on Saturday. Particular attention is paid to the Roma/Romni focus, which is being held to mark the 30th anniversary of the attack in Oberwart. Artists such as Herbert Brettl and Katharina and Ferry Janoska will perform here, with musical support from Franz Hautzinger and Bozana Meidl-Brajic.

Janisch's opening reading was also a homage to the Austrian writer Franz Michael Felder, giving the audience a deep insight into his literary world. Ivancsics, who also mentioned the organizational challenges in selecting authors in the opening speech, also presented her own book “Zanzibar, Explorations of a Paradise”. With a variety of topics - from life struggles to questions of mobility and freedom - the entire program is characterized by impressive diversity.

Art in focus

Accompanying the literary performance, the visual artist Helga Cmelka will exhibit her abstract-concrete landscape paintings, giving event guests the opportunity to also experience visual art. Visitors are offered a holistic cultural experience that expands not only their literary but also their artistic horizons.

The Literature Days at Weinwerk set new standards and invite all literature lovers to embark on a fascinating journey of discovery through the world of books and art. While the event continues until Sunday, September 14, 2025, one thing is clear: Something is happening! Anyone who wants to be touched by the diverse voices and perspectives should not miss this festival of literature.
