Frenzy in Zell am See: Police stop dangerous novice drivers!
On the evening of September 6th, a dangerous incident occurred in Zell am See that has the potential to prevent tragedies on our streets. The local police stopped two novice drivers who were causing a stir with risky overtaking maneuvers. The two young Lennys, 17 and 18 years old, have put their lives in danger more than once with their risky driving maneuvers and endangered the safety of other road users. They overtook a car at the same time - one from the left, the other from the right, across a turning lane and a bus stop. What were they doing?
Fortunately, the officers were there and were able to stop the two vehicles in time. It turned out that they were traveling far too fast and were carrying out overtaking maneuvers that not only took place over restricted lines, but also in areas where overtaking was prohibited. The result was that the two novice drivers had their licenses confiscated and they had to face charges.
The dangers for novice drivers
The incidents in Zell am See are not an isolated case. Horrifying statistics from the ADAC show that novice drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 are involved in almost a third of all traffic accidents. This is almost twice as common as for drivers over 25 years old. This is the reality on the roads when you consider that the probationary period for novice drivers lasts two years and can begin as early as 17 years of age with accompanied driving. During this time, special regulations apply to ensure that young drivers sit behind the wheel responsibly.
Given these circumstances, it is particularly alarming that the two drivers from Zell am See not only put their own lives at risk, but also the lives of others. The behavior of these young drivers could have had fatal consequences, especially considering that after another incident that evening, a 43-year-old Slovakian drove on the B311 near St. Martin in Lofer and caused a traffic accident with significant property damage. The driver was drunk - an alcohol test showed a blood alcohol level of 2.2. His driver's license was also taken away.
Alcohol and new drivers
The main attack on road safety is alcohol abuse. There are strict laws not only in Austria, but also in many European countries. Generalized rules state that in Germany there is an absolute ban on alcohol for novice drivers under the age of 21. If the blood alcohol level reaches 0.2 per mille, there is a risk of severe penalties and an extension of the probationary period. These are warning signs that both parents and young adults should take seriously.
At this point we would also like to point out the importance of motor vehicle liability insurance, which is essential for every driver, especially new drivers. Liability insurance covers damage caused to third parties and can prevent financial ruin in an emergency. In addition, a no-claims bonus can be transferred from parents to children, meaning you can save twice as much.
The incidents in Zell am See are a stark reminder of how important it is to drive responsibly and minimize the risk to yourself and others. Because there is always something to lose - just carelessness is not a good companion on our roads.
