Philipp Hochmair: Two gripping crime thrillers on Sunday evening on ORF!

Philipp Hochmair investigates new crime novels

What's new on TV? Things will get exciting for crime thriller fans on September 21, 2025: ORF will present “The Vulture – Friend or Foe,” a new film from the popular Alpine crime thriller series. This follows the first episode of “The Vulture,” which aired on September 7, 2024. Hochmair plays the main role of former criminal inspector Lukas Geier, who hunts criminals in Bad Gastein and the surrounding area. Filming took place in September and October 2024 and is based on the novel “Buona Notte” by Andrea di Stefano.

Lukas Geier has a shadowy life: After he was once involved in the witness protection program, he himself now becomes the target of an undercover game. He has to deal with a hitman who wants to offer him a new identity in order to find a mole within the police force. Geier receives support from a strong cast, including Patricia Aulitzky, Julia Koch and Wotan Wilke Möhring. Director Florian Baxmeyer has brought a captivating script by Dirk Eisfeld to life. As [SN] reports, the adventure begins at 8:15 p.m. on ORF 2.

The Vulture: A Dangerous Game

“The Vulture” confronts Hochmair's character with his past when a young woman is found murdered in a hotel, leading to a desperate race against time. The involvement of Geier, whose cell phone number is found on the dead woman's arm, offers even more suspense. The investigator, Inspector Franziska Conte, and Lara Schnee, a childhood friend of Geier, are at his side. Patricia Aulitzky describes her role as a safe haven for the tormented vulture.

The day after “The Vulture” there is another gripping film with Hochmair: “Blindly Investigated – Ghosts of the Past”. He once again takes on the leading role and investigates as Alex Haller, who escapes a failed kidnapping attempt and goes in search of the truth. This crime thriller also has a lot to offer, because Haller is dependent on the help of his partner Niko Falk, while a mysterious taxi driver has a decisive influence on events.

Insight into crime statistics

These compelling stories come into even greater focus against the backdrop of current police statistics. According to [BMI], around 489,000 offenses were reported in Austria in 2022, which represents a significant increase compared to 2021. The increase in cybercrime reports is particularly noticeable, which has increased by over 30 percent. Extremism and economic crime are other challenges that continue to preoccupy the security forces. Violent crime rose 16.9 percent, while property crime increased 28 percent.

The topics already covered in “The Vulture” reflect a reality that not only affects our society fictionally, but also directly. Here tension is conveyed in a way that makes you think - about the daily madness in which good fights against evil.

In summary, viewers can look forward to two exciting evenings full of crime action with Philipp Hochmair, which offer insights into the complex relationships between right and wrong. As you can see, television has a lot to offer.
