Meadow market in Bleiburg: The largest folk festival in southern Carinthia starts!

In Bleiburg, until September 1st, everything revolves around the Wiesenmarkt, the largest and oldest folk festival in southern Carinthia. The traditional market mutates into a venue for social gatherings, culinary delights and colorful entertainment. The meadow market, which was originally created as a livestock market, now offers a lot more than just classic trading.

Chefs and stallholders present their delicacies in the festival tents, while visitors stroll through the grocer's market and try out the various rides. A very special highlight is the “Alpe-Adria Exhibition”, which is taking place for the 26th time this year. Exhibitors from the entire region as well as from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia will show their products and services.

Celebrations and traditions

The Wiesenmarkt starts with a big parade that runs from Grenzlandheim via Postgasse until October 10th. This ceremony, led by the market town council and local commanders of the fire brigade, military and police, is accompanied by music from the Jauntal Trachtenkapelle from Loibach. A knight on horseback runs through the crowd, while the Freyung group, led by city judge Martin Dobnigg, creates a festive atmosphere.

Particularly interesting is the historic land rent ceremony, which takes place on the lower main square and is handed over from the municipality of Bleiburg to the parish of Bleiburg. This tradition is not only a showcase for the locals, but also an attraction for numerous visitors who want to experience the event up close.

Commitment to the community

Another notable element of the Wiesenmarkt is the Bleiburg Kulturstadt Lions Club competition, which has been an integral part of the celebrations for 38 years. With a price of just 2 euros per ticket, all proceeds go to people in need in the region. Tickets will be available until Monday, September 1st at 5pm in the Lions Hut and the grand raffle will take place at 5.30pm in the Breznik Tent.

The Makita Roadshow will also be presented for the first time on the Landtechnik Radocha company premises. Gerald Radocha is celebrating 20 years of service to agricultural, forestry and gardening technology with his master business and offers visitors individual advice.

The Wiesenmarkt in Bleiburg is not only a festival of joy and conviviality, but also a sign of tradition and community spirit. Festivals like this in Carinthia show how lively and diverse the local culture is.
