Traffic chaos in Grafenstein: overtaking maneuver ends in crash!
On October 17th there was an accident on the L107 Grafensteiner Straße in Grafenstein that caused violent waves. A 53-year-old driver from the Wolfsberg district overlooked an oncoming car while overtaking. In this incident, the man had his 55-year-old wife in the car, while an 18-year-old moped driver from the Klagenfurt Land district was also nearby.
The accident occurred around 5:10 p.m. when the 53-year-old decided to move into the opposite lane. Because the sun was low, he didn't notice that a 20-year-old woman from the St. Veit district was walking toward him. The side collision was inevitable and both vehicles were badly affected.
Consequences of the accident
The 53-year-old's car slid along the road for a few meters before coming to a stop on the right-hand lane. The 20-year-old's vehicle was pushed into an adjacent field and came to a stop about five meters off the road. While the moped driver, who was hit by an unknown object in the face area of the crash helmet, fortunately did not fall, the two drivers suffered different injuries. The 20-year-old was taken to Klagenfurt Hospital with unspecified injuries. The 18-year-old was probably not injured, although she was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. However, the couple in the 53-year-old's car escaped unscathed.
Accidents like this are not uncommon, and the statistics of the Destatis proves that road safety is a serious issue. Recording traffic accidents not only helps in analyzing the causes of accidents, but also in developing measures to improve traffic safety. These statistics contain comprehensive data on people and vehicles involved in accidents as well as various causes of accidents.
A look at road safety
According to official statistics from... KBA Over 10 million people are already registered in the fitness to drive register (FAER). The latest surveys show worrying figures: more than 238,000 crimes were recorded in 2024, including numerous alcohol violations and hit and run accidents. The most common traffic offenses are speeding violations. This data provides an important basis for state transport policy and contributes to the development of effective measures to increase road safety.
Hopefully this incident will be a wake-up call for all road users to be careful, especially when overtaking and at dusk when visibility is limited by the sun.
