200 runners in Klagenfurt set an example for mental health!

Early in the morning, more precisely on October 10, 2025, around 200 people gathered at the Loretto lido in Klagenfurt to spread an important message: mental health is crucial for well-being in our society. On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the 2nd Mental Health Run took place here, organized by the Pro Mente Group Carinthia.

In late summer temperatures and bright sunshine, the participants ran a five-kilometer route to the Stone Bridge and back. Christian Wallner, the leader of the event, impressed with his team from Pro Mente Kärnten, which is led by Petra Müller and Brigitte Kowatsch. Former KAC defender Martin Schumnig and state governor Peter Kaiser insisted on setting an example for mental health.

Together for mental health

The event was not just for running fun, but also had an important social aspect. Through voluntary donations, instead of an entry fee, the proceeds went to the “Path of the Senses” project in the Haus Flurgasse transitional living facility in Klagenfurt. A handmade wooden medal from Saluto Villach for each participant rounded off the experience.

One goal of the event was to send a visible signal for more openness and acceptance regarding mental illnesses. “The field of runners shows us that interest in mental health is becoming ever greater,” said Ferdinand Bucher, regional director of Wiener Städtische Versicherung, who supported the event.

Mental health in focus

Mental illness is an issue that not only affects the individual, but also the professional world. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) publication, it is estimated that over 15% of working-age adults are affected, which can significantly impact their professional participation and productivity. The WHO recently presented guidelines to promote strategies to improve mental health in the workplace. A key goal of these recommendations is to increase workers' health literacy and create a supportive environment.

This makes it all the more important that events like the Mental Health Run provide both attention and financial resources for improving mental health. “Mental health must be on the agenda – not just once a year, but every day,” emphasizes Christian Wallner.

In summary, the Mental Health Run is not just about sport, but above all about community commitment to mental health. With this in mind, it is hoped that such events will continue to encourage and inspire people.
