Drug offenders and frenzy: Police in Burgenland sound the alarm!

Road safety in Burgenland is more in focus than ever: On Thursday, officials from the state traffic department targeted numerous vehicle drivers. Not only cell phone offenses without a hands-free device were checked, but also suspected cases of alcohol and drug drivers, as well as accident-related offenses. These checks took place on both high-level roads and the low-level road network.

Road traffic shouldn't be a little more relaxed: According to the police, three drivers were impaired by drugs. They were two men from the Neusiedl am See district, aged 22 and 44, and a 34-year-old from the Eisenstadt-Raum district. All three drivers had their licenses provisionally revoked, which shows that the police are taking decisive action against such violations. The inspection also focused on technical defects: one vehicle was found to have exceeded the permissible near-field level by 18.5 decibels after the rear silencer was removed and replaced with a pipe. Due to “imminent danger”, the license plate and registration certificate were also removed. A total of 25 reports and 11 warrants were issued during the checks, and the police plan to continue these strict measures in the future in order to put an end to distracted driving, drug-related offenses and technical manipulation, such as the one courier reported.

High numbers of traffic controls

However, the controls are not carried out in isolation. Further targeted activities were carried out on Friday, during which around 600 vehicle drivers were checked. The focus was again on alcohol and drug offenses as well as other traffic offenses. In particular, 475 breathalyzer and breathalyzer tests were carried out. The officers discovered that two drivers were over the legal alcohol limit of 0.8 per mille. But most of the reports came from other areas: a total of 322 “other reports” were filed, while 255 punishment orders were issued. Particular attention was paid to speeding violations, of which 465 were detected.

The use of flashlights in the region was also impressive: in the Jennersdorf district, a car driver was stopped at a rapid speed of 158 km/h on the S7, where only 100 km/h is permitted. Another driver was also recorded traveling at 161 km/h on the A6 in Neusiedl. The police show once again that speeding is consistently punished to ensure safety on the roads meinkreis.at is reported.

Drug influence in traffic

The situation surrounding drug drivers is alarming. A dark field study by the Board of Trustees for Road Safety from 2023 shows that around 250,000 people drove a vehicle while under the influence of drugs. Nevertheless, there were only 8,676 reports of drug driving. This represents only about 3% of estimated cases, indicating that a large proportion of impaired drivers remain undetected. According to the study, the need for action in Austria to improve drug detection is clear, and it is recommended to implement suitable devices and procedures in order to remove drug traffickers more efficiently. This is considered necessary to comply with European standards, describes that KFV.

Overall, it is clear that the Burgenland police are taking decisive action against traffic offenses. The combination of controls, technical inspections and intensive measures against drug and alcohol abuse while driving could ensure greater safety on our roads in the long term.
