Dangerous bike paths in Floridsdorf: 109 accident sites uncovered!

In Floridsdorf, a worrying picture for cyclists shows. Despite the ongoing bike path expansion, there are numerous dangerous places reported by the cyclists. My district reported that the Verkehrsclub Austria (VCÖ) has created a card on which a total of 109 such problem areas are recorded.

The situation in Nordmanngasse is particularly alarming, where a driving ban is regularly ignored for motorized vehicles. This street is strongly frequented by cyclists, which endangers the safety of pedestrians and children. Another example is Trillergasse: Here the bike path leads into nothing in front of the intersection with Brünner Straße, which unnecessarily makes the way to the center for cyclists.

difficult traffic conditions

The intersection Kammelweg/Rudolf-Virchow-Straße is also considered confusing. Drivers often do not adhere to the speed limit of 30 km/h; Legal turns often do not flash and take the curves too sharp. The VCÖ has recognized that there is a significant need for action in the wheel infrastructure. Kleine Zeitung clear that more than 81% of fatal bike accidents happened on public roads, with most of these incidents walking outside of the villages.

An alarming development is the high number of senior citizens affected; This age group concerned over half of the 32 fatal accidents in 2024. The number of fatal wheel accidents gradually drops, but the majority of accidents still occur due to poor infrastructure. In the period from 2021 to 2023 there were only two fatal accidents on structurally separate bike paths.

Together for safe bike paths

The VCÖ plans to specifically identify problematic positions in cycling in close cooperation with the population. An online card enables the citizens to report dangerous sections, which are then forwarded to responsible bodies. Such reports have been addressed in urban areas such as Vienna, Graz and Linz, since missing or inadequate cycle paths and dangerous crossings are often criticized here.

The ongoing cycle path offensive in Floridsdorf, which also includes a "climate gym" from the old Danube to the Marchfeld channel, could possibly ensure some improvements. But the VCÖ and the population agree: a comprehensive and sustainable strategy is required to significantly increase the safety of cyclists. orf added that more investments in the cycling infrastructure are particularly necessary on streets with speed limits over 30 km/h in order to avoid accidents and thus also deaths in the future.
