Students experience moving lecture by contemporary witness of the Mühlviertel rabbit hunt
At the end of April, the students of the 4th classes of the Gallneukirchen middle school experienced an impressive morning in the Kino Katsdorf. Invited by the committed Manfred Penninger and the Mauthausen Committee, the students listened to the moving lecture by the 94-year contemporary witness Anna Hackl, born Langthaler. She reported on her tireless efforts during the "Mühlviertel rabbit hunt" when her family hid two fled prisoners from the Mauthausen concentration camp and saved their lives at life. She urged these dramatic experiences, which the students visibly touched.
In her lively stories, Ms. Hackl gave the young people a deep insight into the events that took place on February 2, 1945. On this day, around 500 prisoners of the Mauthausen concentration camp made a desperate attempt to break out. The conditions were brutal: on the night at minus eight degrees Celsius they fought for their survival. Many of them who escaped during the mass outbreak were persecuted and murdered by the SS. In addition to the military forces, civilians also participated in this cruel hunting, which in history as a "Mühlviertel rabbit hunt" also took a sad place. According to reports, only 11 people survived, saved by forced laborers and some brave farming families who opposed the murder campaign. A cruel chapter in Austrian history that cannot be seen.emotional reactions of the students
The students were visibly impressed and emotionally moved after the lecture. One of them noticed how detailed and vividly Ms. Hackl reported on the dramatic events despite her old age. "It is frightening to what acts people are capable of and at the same time impressive that others in such a danger have the courage to help," said another student and thus reflects the thoughts of many of his classmates.
After the haunting lecture, the students saw the film "Hasenjagd - there is no mercy out of sheer cowardice" that addresses the war crimes and the courageous efforts of the Langthaler family. This was not only an educational experience, but also an important step to raise awareness of the crimes of the past and to keep the memory of the victims alive.
Thank you very much to the community of Gallneukirchen, which has taken over the financial support for the bus ride for this memorable event. The examination of history can set the course for a constant memory of our past - especially at a time when many of these stories could be forgotten.
The "Mühlviertler Hasenjagd" remains not only a reminder, but also a sign that humanity and civil courage can shine in the darkest hours. Meinverzirk reports on this special school event and the moving memories of the contemporary witness. The memorial events around the "Mühlviertel Hasenjagd" keep reminiscent of the importance of memory work and the responsibility of the post -born not to be forgotten this story.
