City of Ried starts revolutionary energy master plan to reduce costs!

What an exciting development in the city of Ried! The city plans to significantly reduce its energy consumption and has launched an ambitious "energy master plan". Mayor Bernhard Zwielehner from the ÖVP plans to reduce the total energy consumption of urban institutions by a whopping 20 percent by 2030. The annual heating and electricity requirement of the 26 urban institutions is currently on 6.1 million kWh, which corresponds to the energy consumption of around 400 single-family houses, as tips.at.

The years between 2021 and 2024 have already shown that the city is on the right track. Thanks to targeted measures, energy consumption was reduced by over 1.2 million kWh - this corresponds to a decline of more than 27 percent. Among other things, this is made possible by new photovoltaic systems that have reduced the electricity consumption by 16 percent during this period. The large electricity consumers are particularly eye -catching: over 50 percent of the electricity requirement are eliminated on street lighting and indoor pool.

energy master plan: an overview

The "Energy Master Plan Ried 2030" not only offers solutions to reduce energy consumption, but is also intended to reduce the costs. The urban energy consumption currently adds up to around 1.3 million euros per year, of which the costs for electricity with 500,000 euros, geothermal energy with 600,000 euros, gas with 80,000 euros and diesel and petrol for urban vehicles for urban vehicles. Due to the saving of 20 percent, the city could save over 250,000 euros annually, a step that would be a real relief for the city's budget, according to [Nachrichten.at] (https://www.nachrichten.at/oberoesterreich/innviertel/stadt-ried-pra and--energie-masterplan ;art70,4062529).

A central point in the master plan is the change of gas supply. The loss of gas, which is currently still used in six objects, is to be replaced by district heating by 2030. This is already provided for more than 2,700 apartments, 240 single -family houses, 120 companies and 15 large companies, including the Ried hospital. An annual CO₂ saving of over 16,500 tons is created here-another step towards a more sustainable city.

innovative approaches and future projects

The switch to environmentally friendly technologies does not stop. The city plans to switch road lighting to energy-efficient LED lamps in order to further reduce electricity consumption. There is also news in the fleet: a fire brigade vehicle will be operated with HVO 100, a hydrated vegetable oil. This conversion enables CO₂ reduction of up to 90 percent compared to conventional diesel. In 2024 the fleet consumed a total of 63,500 liters of fuel, and the changeover to HVO 100 will reduce the environmental impact.

How important a strategic approach is to the topic of energy efficiency underlines the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, supporting municipalities in the creation of energy and climate protection concepts as well as in the identification of savings potential. Here, municipalities like Ried can act as role models and not only meet their obligation to make climate goals, but also inspire citizens and local companies to also become active. ibp.fraunhofer.de relies on innovative solutions and comprehensive analysis to increase efficiency intelligently.

The city of Ried is therefore on a very good way to be a role model for other communities in Austria. With the “energy master plan” and the savings measures already initiated, not only the budget is relieved, but also made an important contribution to the protection of our environment.
