Anniversary of the Wine Knighthood: Celebration in the Güssing Basilica thrilled!

On August 31, 2025, the fourth anniversary of the “Mons Ferrum” legacy of the European Knights of Wine took place in the minor basilica in Güssing. The festive event was accompanied musically by the wind instruments of the Güssing town band. To the sound of fanfares, the officiating Senate of dignitaries solemnly entered the church, while Eques Eduard Fikisz warmly welcomed the assembled guests.

A special highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the knight's priest's stole to the city priest Father Raphael by Consul General Alfred Tombor-Tintera during a holy mass. Father Raphael blessed not only the regalia but also the wine, which was an interesting moment for everyone present. Kurt Herwey was subsequently accredited as Hospes and the new Consiliarii, including Josef Lehner, Gerhard Stepan and Norman Thot, were ceremoniously enthroned. Consul General Tombor-Tintera presented Josef Lehner with the Golden Cross of Knighthood - an honor that will certainly be remembered for years.

Tradition and community

The European wine knighthood is fully committed to wine culture and the appreciation of wine. In particular, the aim of maintaining cultural heritage and promoting European integration are at the heart of the order, as can be read on the Weinritter Mons Ferrum website. The order, which is deeply rooted in the medieval knightly tradition, places great value on personal friendships, the enjoyment of wine and the appreciation of fine arts. He remains neutral towards denominations, politics and economics.

Along with the celebratory moments, an agape was also organized in the monastery courtyard, followed by a banquet at the knighthood's residence in Deutsch Tschantschendorf. Such events promote exchange and cooperation within the knighthood and bring the members closer together.

Commitment to the future

The Knightly Senate, which is based in Eisenstadt, represents the regional knighthoods and is involved in social, charitable and cultural initiatives. The order's threshold phrase, "Only when you conquer envy and start working for others, will you become a true chivalrous person," underlines the ethical commitment of the members and the sense of community that is at the forefront.

The Mons Ferrum legate was proclaimed on October 6, 2007 and celebrated its 10th anniversary in Pinkafeld in 2017. An exciting history that attracts many regional wine lovers and interested parties and leaves room for future events and initiatives.
