Fraudulent mailbox robbery: caught young people in Vienna!

In the Brigittenau district in Vienna, two 15-year-old young people were arrested who are suspected of having broken post boxes in a multi-party house. According to Wien-Brigittenau-Fest, the police were alerted by an attentive resident who observed four to five young people in the act. Immediate search was carried out by the Brigittenau city police command, which ultimately led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrators who come from Iraq and Syria. At the scene of the crime, a torn package with a women's swimsuit and an associated postal receiver was secured. However, the young people were not confessed with their interrogation, and the Vienna public prosecutor ordered their admission to a prison. The investigation into possible accomplices is still underway.

The arrest of these two young people highlights the growing problem of youth crime in Austria. The situation has increased increasingly in recent years. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner was concerned about a series of acts of violence by young perpetrators who trigger outrage nationwide. In a [report by NZZ.CH] (https://www.nzz.ch/oTernational/oesterreich- Jugendkriminalitaet-wien-Alart-die-Ld.1823057) Karner emphasizes that these incidents require an urgent political reaction. This also includes considerations of reducing punishment in order to hold younger perpetrators responsible for more serious offenses.

Current developments in youth crime

The alarming statistics show an increase in young people suspects, especially between the ages of 10 and 14. At the same time, the number of convictions of minors is over a third below the level of ten years ago. Among other things, this is attributed to changes in youth criminal law, which are viewed critically by many experts. They advocate pedagogical solutions instead of hard legal punishments.

To improve the situation, Karner and Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler presented new measures to combat youth crime on May 31, 2024. These are not only against the perpetrators themselves, but also take into account questions of integration and social support. Among the measures are mandatory discussions with the police for minors and their parents. In the event of a non -appearance, fines threaten to signal that the behavior has consequences. These initiatives are intended to help protect children and take young people responsible.

In another worrying incident in Vienna, a young man was seriously injured when he tried to help women who were bothered in a gelateria. According to NZZ.CH there were recently several knife stabbing in the same area, which underlines the need for further measures. Chancellor Karl Nehammer even called for a weapons ban on public space to increase security.

the general security situation

The increasing act of violence and the role of young people within these incidents are not only concerned with concern within politics, but also in the general public. More and more voices are calling for clearer measures to ensure the security of citizens and bring young people on the right track. In this context, the education and youth protection policy in Austria has to do all hands to work preventively and break through a vicious circle of violence.

The current developments show that there is a lot at stake and that a rethink in society is necessary to prevent future serious incidents. The pressure to act on politics is growing in order to increase security in the country and at the same time to set an example against violence among young people.
