Hike ends dramatically: Ms. breaks wrist on the Großer Almkogel!

On Saturday, May 31, 2025, a 53-year-old woman from the Amstetten district experienced an unfortunate fall during a hike to the Great Almkogel in the municipal area of 4463 Großraming. On site, the injured primary care was received by the Steyr/Losenstein mountain rescue and was then brought to PEK Steyr for outpatient treatment. My district reports that such incidents are unfortunately not uncommon.

A number of serious accidents have occurred in the Austrian mountains recently. A five -member hiking group from Germany came in mountainous on May 24, 2025 in the Wilder Kaiser. These accidents make up 60% of all reported incidents. Despite a decline in the number of accidents by 25% compared to the previous year, the danger of mountain tours remains Alpenverein .

Awareness of the dangers in the mountains should be sharpened continuously. Many of the accidents could be avoided by better preparation, suitable equipment and a realistic assessment of one's own skills. Experts warn that in particular, climate change changes the conditions in the mountains and that tours make you potentially risky.

What does that mean for us hiking friends? Nature often cannot be mastered, and especially in the mountains like in Upper Austrian areas you always have to be on the hat. The recent injury to the 53-year-olds should remind us all of us to act responsibly and know our limits. Stay safe and enjoy the beauty of nature!
