Water for Uganda: Gmundens Rotary project saves 92,400 life!

A big step for development aid in Uganda: The “Campus of Practical Skills” project in Nakaziba was successfully completed after seven years of successful engagements. The Rotary Club Gmunden launched this initiative in order not only to improve the quality of life on site, but also to build a reliable water supply in the remote regions of Uganda. According to Tips benefit from the sustainable infrastructures that created as part of this project were.

with a total project volume of 355,000 euros, of which 40 percent is financed by the state of Upper Austria, 43 Rotary Clubs from Austria, Germany and Uganda and the NGO "Children have a chance". The beneficial cooperation and the common goal of promoting education and water access as a key to development show how global cohesion can be designed.

concrete success of the project

In recent years, the project has achieved remarkable results: Between 2021 and 2024, 16 new wells were drilled and 46 existing fountains were extensively renovated. In addition, 11 solar -powered pump stations were installed, which supply 83 villages with water. In order to be able to cover the maintenance requirement, four maintenance teams were trained and equipped with tremons.

A big problem in Uganda is the sustainable maintenance of these infrastructures. Over 70 percent of the wells fail after a few years if there is no professional care. Therefore, the “Campus of Practical Skills” training center in Nakaziba has played a major role. With practical training courses in areas such as electrics, water installation, tailoring and furniture construction, over 500 young people received access to education and a professional perspective for the first time. The installation of 28 large solar panels for schools and workshops as well as 109 mini solar systems for households also contributes to improving living conditions.

positive changes and personal stories

Walter Ebner and Ludwig Noska, the project managers, were on site in the summer of 2024 and were able to convince themselves of the positive changes. An inspiring story reports on a young woman who could enable a water connection with her first income after her training her mother. This shows impressively how education can not only improve individual opportunities, but also the living conditions of entire families.

The partnership with "Children A Opportunity" that supports disadvantaged children in Uganda, such as orphans and HIV-positive, was rated as sustainable and efficient. The project shows how important education is as a key to development and self -determination. "We have to tackle together," emphasizes Past President Günter Neumann and emphasizes how significantly the global cooperation is to improve the living conditions of people.

With a view to the future, the Rotary Club Gmunden plans to continue to contribute actively to sustainable development in Africa and beyond and to create further projects. International cooperation in the Rotary network brings hope and progress to the most remote regions.
