High risk of forest fires in Burgenland: Strict bans now apply!

There is currently a high risk of forest fires in Burgenland. The Federal Ministry has urgently warned of the increased risk of fire and has issued a strict ban on fires and smoking in and near forests. Particular caution is required in endangered regions such as Güssing, Jennersdorf, Neusiedl am See, Mattersburg, Eisenstadt area, Oberpullendorf and Oberwart. There is currently a drastic warning across the state that points out that over 80% of forest fires are caused by human error. Since the beginning of the year, 160 forest fires have been documented, causing a total of 56 hectares of forest to go up in flames, as MeinBezirk reports.

In order to counteract the increasing fire risks, the district authorities have issued regulations which, if violated, can be punished with fines of up to 7,270 euros or even up to four weeks in prison. This particularly includes the ban on throwing away burning or smoldering things such as cigarettes. Fires in the forest are only permitted with express permission.

Authorities have established five key rules that every citizen should follow to avoid forest fires:

• Rauchverbot beachten.
• Kein Feuer im Wald (Lagerfeuer, Grillfeuer, Asche).
• Vorsicht bei Brauchtumsfeuer und Feuerwerk.
• Behördliche Verbote in waldbrandgefährdeten Gebieten strikt einhalten.
• Bei Waldbränden umgehend die Feuerwehr unter 122 alarmieren.
