Massive restrictions in the Vienna public network: train and subway affected!

Meidling, Österreich - Currently there are significant restrictions in public transport in Vienna, which were announced by the Vienna lines and the ÖBB. The situation is caused by extensive construction work and modernization measures that will last until the coming months.

The S-Bahn line S45, an important on-site line, is interrupted by June 23, 2025 between Heiligenstadt and Handelskai. During this time, a rail replacement traffic was set up by bus that depart from Rudolf-Gelbard-Gasse in Heiligenstadt and Engerthstraße in Handelskai. This measure is part of a comprehensive series of construction work that affects Viennese traffic adjustment.

essential restrictions in S-Bahn and U-Bahn traffic

From June 28 to September 1, 2025, the S-Bahn line between Floridsdorf and Praterstern is closed. Here, too, a rail replacement traffic is set up in the form of two bus lines, the SV900 (blue line) and the SV905 (yellow line). The S40 will also be affected, because between Klosterneuburg-Weidling and St. Andrä-Wördern there will be a rail replacement traffic from June 29 to September 1, 2025.

In addition, all trains on the R40 line fail and the Rex4 connections are also affected. For the U4, one of the main lines in Vienna, there are considerable restrictions until August 31, 2025: There will be no trips between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke. The U4 will temporarily run between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke as well as between Schottenring and Hütteldorf. For the desire to commute between Schottenring and Heiligenstadt, the tram line E4 was set up as a replacement line.

construction work and modernizations

The U6 station Tschertegasse remains modernized by December 2025, whereby the U6 only stops in the direction of seven-shirt. During the autumn holidays, the line will also receive new course between Spittelau and Jägerstraße. The ring road will also be affected by closures and restrictions: lines 1, 2, 71 and d will be affected from June 28 to the end of August 2025.

The track work on Hütteldorfer Straße is also carried out comprehensively. Around 1,800 meters of tracks are exchanged. As a result, line 49 is stopped during work, while lines take over 46 and 52 parts of the route. In addition, line 18 from July 7th to August 22, 2025 will be canceled due to construction work.

New developments in the Vienna Transport Network

The preparations for future changes are also in full swing: from autumn 2025 there will be new tram lines 12 and 27. Particularly noteworthy is the planned extension of tram line 18, which is scheduled to start in mid -2025. The commissioning of the new route is expected for autumn 2026 - this shows that Viennese traffic planning is not only at the pulse of time, but also wants to react to the challenges of the next few years.

A total of around 11 kilometers of tracks and 45 new course will be exchanged in Vienna by the end of 2025, which should improve public transport in the long term. While the construction work initially ensures unrest and changes in the everyday life of the Viennese, the modernization and the creation of new connections promise a positive development for mobility in the city.
