Connection railway plans: ÖBB under pressure - construction start in danger!
The discussion about the plans for the ÖBB connecting railway continues to keep the residents in Hietzing in suspense. A construction start in autumn 2023 is planned, but the implementation is delayed. Critics of the initiative are concerned about the introduction of the 15-minute cycle for the S80, which could run until 2036. The last construction phase can only begin later, which causes some unrest. However, ÖBB remains optimistic and hopes that the work can begin from September 2025 if there is a judgment of the Federal Administrative Court. MeinDärzirk reports that district chairman Johanna Sperker (ÖVP) has expressed her concerns at the current time, since no final UVP decision is available.
As part of the construction work, ÖBB also plans to build an transfer office in the Veitingergasse/Jagdschlossgasse area and pedestrian underpasses in the same place. Another important point in the discussion is the planned tree plantings on private ground, as there is a lack of available public areas. The ÖBB has promised to cover the costs. The tree plantings are to take place up to 1,000 meters from the route in order to burden the residents as little as possible.
tree plantings and criticism
But the "connecting railway better" initiative criticizes that the quantities of trees to be felled were not recorded. In order to create transparency, information and documents for plantations on the ÖBB website are to be provided by the end of June. These tree planting actions are important in order to alleviate the effects of construction work on nature and to compensate for the loss of the trees.
The entire project aims to make the connecting railway as part of the inner-city express rail network more attractive, as the ÖBB also explains. The planned west-east connection with the S80 is to run from Vienna Hütteldorf to Vienna Meidling to the Seestadt Aspern. The new route offers numerous connections to the five subway lines in Vienna, which facilitates access to the city center.
improved mobility for Vienna
The attracting of the connecting railway will also significantly improve the possibilities for cyclists. With a total of 400 covered bicycle parking spaces at new stops, switching to public transport is facilitated. This supports the initiative to reduce waiting times at the level crossings. At the moment, the barriers are closed on average 15 to 20 minutes per hour, which could increase drastically to 15 minutes if the S-Bahn clock is compressed. The creation of barrier -free crossing options is therefore a central goal of the project.
While the work progresses, it remains to be seen whether the ÖBB's full -bodied promises can actually be observed for implementation. In any case, the residents have a good sense that their concern must be heard so that the connecting railway not only becomes an improvement, but also an enrichment for Hietzing. Interested parties can track the current status of the projects and possible news via the official ÖBB website, such as here .
