Great traffic chaos in Vienna: S-Bahn and subway closed during summer!

Floridsdorf, Österreich - Summer is just around the corner, and for the Viennese commuters and visitors, the Vienna Lines transport company brings with it some changes. From June 28th to September 1, 2025, the S-Bahn line between Praterstern and Floridsdorf will be closed. For the passengers, this means a rail replacement traffic with the bus lines SV900 and SV905. This measure is part of a comprehensive renovation program that affects the entire city.

From June 29, the S40 will also be underneath: Here a replacement of rails between Klosterneuburg-Weidling and St. Andrä-Wördern will be set up here. Trips to the lines R40 and REX4 are completely canceled during this period. So if you are dependent on these routes, you should better look for alternatives in time.

subway and tram in conversion

The U4 remains affected from June 28 to August 31, if renovation work is carried out between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke. Therefore, the U4 only temporarily drives between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke and between Schottenring and Hütteldorf. Among other things, the E4 tram line and the popular D-line ensures further mobility, while line 31 will be traveling in denser intervals in the future.

But the U6 also gets a refreshment - at the Tschertegasse station will be modernized until December 2025. During this work, the U6 only holds towards Siebenhirten. From February 2026, the other platform will be taken out of operation.

additional construction work and diversions

The Viennese lines ask the passengers to adjust to numerous barriers and diversions. From June 28th to the end of August, there will be a lock on the ring road and diversions for lines 1, 2, 71 and D. Gleis and course work make a temporary changeover necessary.

Particularly extensive track work is also available on Hütteldorfer Straße, where 1,800 meters of tracks are exchanged. Line 49 is set during this period, while lines 46 and 52 parts of the route will take over.

Line 18 must take a break from July 7th to August 22nd. Here a replacement line is offered by line 62 and bus E6. At the same time, line 6 between Burggasse-Stadthalle and Eichenstraße is also closed from July 7 to August 22, with a replacement bus 6e. Line 37 will not be able to run from July 28th to August 14th due to track construction work; Here the passengers can dodge on lines 38, d, 10a, 38a and 39a.

The changes and work are also noticeable in line 43, which will be blocked between Elterleinplatz and Schottenring from June 16 to September 1. Line 9 is only used between Westbahnhof and Rosensteingasse during the construction work.

However, there is a ray of hope for everyone who relies on public transport: In autumn 2025, new tram lines under numbers 12 and 27 and the extension of line 18 are planned, with construction work that begins in mid -2025.

Totally in Vienna in 2025 around 11 kilometers of tracks and 45 new course will be renewed. Here the Viennese lines are well positioned to ensure smooth traffic in the future. Curious people can find out more at Wienerlinien.at, while the current developments can also be pursued at orf.at.
