City of Hall is fighting against ceiling: renovation costs of 441,000 euros!

Hall in Tirol, Österreich - In Hall, a serious incident at the elementary school on the abbey square causes excitement and need for action. In June a blanket broke in a classroom, which caused major damage than originally assumed. The mayor, Christian Margreiter, reported in the most recent council meeting about the alarming situation, which will now lead to the renovation of a total of eleven classrooms. The city administration brings this unexpected challenge to the bredouille, since the costs of a total of 441,000 euros were not planned in the budget.

A closer look at the cause of the ceiling crash shows that an unstable construction in which slats were nailed on bars was responsible. The nails have loosened over the years and led to this dangerous situation. Overall, not only the affected classrooms have to be repaired, but other schools also have to be checked. During an inspection, similar defects were found in the elementary school on the lower town square that require immediate measures.

Financing the renovation measures

The financing of the upcoming renovation work is applied by various funds. Around 300,000 euros come from the dividend of Hall AG, while a further 93,000 euros can be secured from the country's municipal compensation fund. A contribution to the school sprinkle is also expected, but the insurance company will only be able to cover around 40,000 euros, which means that other, non -insured renovation work from the municipal budget must be financed.

"We have a good hand in finding solutions," said Mayor Margreiter optimistically. He plans to complete the necessary renovations by autumn so that the students can soon learn again in safe and stable rooms.

major projects and renovation needs

But not only the small renovation in the classroom is on the agenda. The comprehensive renovation of the Schönegg education center is expected to cost around 13 million euros. The municipal council therefore approved a total of 555,000 euros for the preparation of the major project, including the tender costs of around 250,000 euros. The relocation of elementary school, kindergarten and after -school care in replacement rooms must now be postponed from summer 2025 to the semester break 2026.

The need for renovation is not only a central topic in Hall. In Germany, the condition of many schools is described as alarming. The Faculty of Educational Sciences points out that students often suffer from flipping plaster and unsanitary toilets. It is estimated that an investment requirement of around 50 billion euros is necessary to bring schools back into shape, with the largest responsibility for the municipalities. Innovative financing models and the involvement of teachers and parents are crucial to promote acceptance and identification with the planned measures.

In the current debate about the renovated school building, it is repeatedly emphasized that not only structural defects are remedied, but also the pedagogical conditions must improve. In many municipalities, the conception is reconsidered in particular from the point of view of 'barrier -free and appealing learning environments', which requires additional investments.

The developments in Hall are only a small part of a larger trend that shows itself in many regions. The need for action is great and the complexity of the renovation projects can sometimes be a challenge, but there is a lot of potential to improve in the air.
