Volunteers save the alpine pastures: tidy up in Styria!

On July 19, 2025, this year's Alm cleaning day took place in the Styrian Ennstal. Over 50 volunteers actively grabbed to free five alpine pastures from disturbing perennials, shrubs and undesirable scrub. This initiative is not only part of the preservation of the breathtaking cultural landscapes, but also an important step against the impending tasting, which threatens around 1000 hectares in Styria every year without regular care. My district reported.

action to preserve biodiversity

During the Alm plaster day, important work was also carried out on the Tyrnaueralm in the border area of the Graz area and Weiz district. Here 25 volunteers helped to remove garbage and to free the alpine pastures from undesirable wood. The measure is essential to ensure the preservation of the alpine pastures. On the Tyrnaueralm, as on the other alpine pastures, it once again became clear how important such actions are to keep the vegetation under control and to ensure the variety of flora and fauna.

The survival ability of these ecosystems depends directly on the regularity of care. According to the Styria Chamber of Agriculture, the annual costs for professional alpine care would be around 40 million euros. Fortunately, the majority of this responsibility is borne by farms, which benefits the preservation and care of the alpine pastures.

A good example of this is the commitment of the over 75 volunteers from the six districts involved, which showed full commitment at this year's Alm plaster day that preserving these valuable cultural landscapes in Styria is a matter close to the heart. Your work makes an indispensable contribution to the preservation of tradition and nature.

In a time when more and more alpine pastures are endangered by bushing and neglect, initiatives such as the alpine plaster day are invaluable. It is up to all of us to protect and preserve these habitats so that future generations can also enjoy the impressive beauty of the Styrian alpine pastures.
