Violent storms in Styria: lightning strikes and hail damage!
On Sunday evening, Styria was hit by violent storms, which were not only characterized by lightning strikes, but also by strong hailsters. The weather conditions caused excitement in particular in Krieglach in the Mürztal: here the sirens triggered at around 5:30 p.m. when a massive hail damaged the light domes of the local savings bank. The fire brigade was quickly on site and took care of the damage by covering the shafts and dried the interior of the affected building with a wet vacuum. In other parts of Styria, too, there were incidents due to the storm.
In St. Lambrecht, the authorities reported a lightning strike that hit a tree and set it on fire. The fire brigade moved out with 26 emergency services to extinguish the fire, which represents a considerable reaction to the weather chaos. In Bad Aussee, on the other hand, a stream stepped over the bank and moved a street with rubble. Here the fire brigade was also there, removed the decoration and ensured that the road was accessible again. In addition, the emergency services cleaned drainage in a residential complex to advance a possible water jam.
weather views for the coming days
The weather conditions remain inconsistent for the next few days. In parts of Styria, rain will continue to be expected in parts of Styria while the temperatures cool down. A deep with the name "Xhevat" is responsible for the current weather situation. Nevertheless, there is also positive news: summer weather is again forecast for the extended weekend. On Thursday, however, thunderstorms could arise in the mountains, which could dampen the anticipation for summer activities.
But not only with regard to the weather there is information that is of interest here. There are also data on the subject of storms in the new brochure "Data Service on the Natural Hazard Report 2024", which offers comprehensive statistics on storm and hail damage in property insurance since 1997. This shows not only the regional distributions of damage events, but also the average amounts of damage reported in the different locations. So far, the next addition of the statistics for 2023 is planned, in which the expected late damage is also taken into account, especially in events that can occur at the end of the year.
For everyone who wants to deal more intensively with the topic of natural hazards, these statistics are available online. It is important to find out about the future risks and dangers through natural events, especially in times when unpredictable weather conditions are the order of the day. A look at the weather and the corresponding data can help to better prepare for similar situations.
For Styria, it remains to be seen how the weather develops and how the emergency services will react to possible other missions. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a quiet weather in the coming days!
