digitization in monument protection

The "Day of the Monument" is not only a celebration of the historical heritage, but also a platform to emphasize the importance of digitization in the field of monument protection. The 30th day of the monument, which will take place on September 28, 2025, has given the motto "Denigitlichen, digitally preserved". In this context, many historical objects in Austria will open their doors, which are usually not accessible. Guided tours and programs emphasize the relevance of digital technologies in monument conservation. Christoph Bazil, President of the Federal Monument Office, emphasizes the role of these technologies for sustainable maintenance of our monuments.

Digitization enables precise documentation and analyzes of historical objects and ensures that هؤلاء treasures for future generations are preserved. Tools such as 3D scans and digital modeling offer new perspectives, while interactive experiences through virtual and augmented reality bring the cultural heritage alive.

a new awareness of the cultural heritage

The importance of digitization is not only recognized in monument protection, but also with regard to the intangible cultural heritage, which is of great importance for the UNESCO. In Austria, work is eagerly working to make cultural forms of expression visible and to create new digital platforms. A central element is the cultural pool - a digital database that not only includes historical knowledge, but also living traditions and customs. The aim is to facilitate access to these cultural treasures and to promote cultural exchange. By 2026, three million cultural assets are to be available via the search portal, and currently 1.5 million digital objects from 98 institutions are already included.

The commitment to digitization of the cultural heritage is also reflected in initiatives that aim to constantly expand the cultural pool. In the future, the intangible cultural heritage will continue to find a place in this valuable collection, which will further consolidate the diversity of Austrian culture.
