Austria's fistball offspring: EM teams are ready for Freistadt!

From 18 to July 20, 2025, the Marianum sports field in Freistadt becomes a scene for aspiring talents in fistball. The European championships in young fistball are just around the corner, and the anticipation is already huge. A total of 19 teams from six nations are expected to compete against each other in the categories U-18 and U-21 of women and men. With such a participation, the event is already a highlight in the Austrian sports calendar.

Austria goes into the race with strong squads and shows that the youth work pays off. The U-21 women of the ÖFB (Austrian Faustball Association) are made up of talented players, including Lea Gossenreiter from the Reichenthal Sports Union and Sophie Neumüller from the Union Raiffeisen Dialog Telekom Arnreit. In the defense area, Lucia Gruber and Nicole Kempf are important supports of the team.

relaxed mood and great challenges

But also the U-21 men show great potential. With players like Manuel Beck from SC Laa/Thaya and Michael Klaffenböck from TV Haka Wohnplan Enns, some promising talents have already emerged. On the other hand, the U-18 categories are located, where the level is just as high. Here Magdalena Karger from the Union Compact Freistadt represents the team of U-18 women, while Philipp Jautz from SV MM Frohnleiten acts as one of the top attackers of the U-18 men.

The tournament will thus be a real test stone for the young athletes who will not only feel the global competition, but also have the opportunity to present themselves at an international level.

The story of the fistball in Austria

The roots of the European Faustball Championships go back far. As early as 1965, the first European Championship took place in Linz. Austria often saw itself on the podium, including several silver medals and also some golden successes, for example in 1984 in Switzerland and 2002 in Germany. With the upcoming European Championship in Freistadt, the history of fistball in Austria is also continued.

A look into the future shows that even the next big events are already being planned. The Emil Fischer Foundation announced the European Championships of women in Switzerland and men in Denmark for 2026. This will be a premiere for Denmark and is a big step for the sport in our neighboring country. As EFA President Franco Giori explains, the event should also strengthen the community in European fistball and involve wider parts of the population.

If you want to support and cheer on the young talents in Freistadt, you have the opportunity to do this in July. And who knows, maybe one or the other of you will soon cause a sensation on an international parquet. A good reason to be there live on site!
