125 years of Marianum Freistadt: A school anniversary full of history!
Freistadt, Österreich - In Freistadt there is reason to celebrate! The Marianists look back on 125 years of their committed work in education. In 1898 they came to the Mühlviertel and took over the Schiffer’s school foundation two years later, which laid the foundation for the Marianum. Since then, school has shaped the school system in Upper Austria as a denominational educational institution. Around 333 pupils are currently being taught in 15 classes by around 40 teachers and the Marianum is now considered one of the largest new middle schools in the region.
The roots of the school go back far: Mayor Ferdinand von Schiffer left a fortune to promote the upbringing of Freistädter youth in 1742. After the piarists inherited the foundation in 1752, they led schools in Freistadt until 1875, but then had to close the branch due to a lack of teachers. The Marianists learned from the fallow foundation and took over the school troops in 1900, so that on September 17, 1900 the lessons in the Marianum, which was still a pure boy school, began and all the places were rapidly occupied. adds that the school received public law in 1901, which was essential for the financing. This development paved the way for the further growth of the educational institution.
The century of transformations
The first years were shaped by continuous new buildings. In 1904 the educational center of the Marianists from Graz was moved to Freistadt and a year later the seat of the Austrian province followed and in 1906 the extensions of the school buildings. These blossomed until 1938 public law went out and the school was finally closed. During the Second World War, the building served, among other things, as a reserve nacet. BMB emphasized that the schools were reopened in 1945, but did not return the teacher training institution. Until 1953, public law was not secured in between, but then school operations could be finally consolidated.
In the course of school reforms, which led to the introduction of secondary school in 1927, the Marianum repeatedly experienced fundamental changes. In 1986 the new secondary school was launched and girls were allowed to attend school for the first time. This was a crucial step in school history, which significantly expanded the self -image of the institution.
