Fake money warns Zwettler: This is how you recognize false notes!

Zwettl, Österreich - The warning of the Zwettl district police commands is currently being taken seriously: in the district, fake banknotes are increasingly in circulation, especially the popular 50 euro note. Chief inspector Manfred Holzbrecher has reported alarming developments in recent months. In March 14 fake banknotes in Zwettl-Stadt, Ottenschlag and Martinsberg were found. There were also other incidents in April, in which three fake banknotes were discovered at financial institutions and companies in Zwettl. The counterfeits are partly of good quality and could be recognized by the counting machines of the financial institutions and the reviews of the Austrian National Bank (OENB).

The range of fake grades comprises a 5-euro, a 20-euro, a total of 14 50-euro and a 100 euro banknote. It is particularly worrying that the police currently have no information about the perpetrator. Therefore, the police call the population and especially the employees in the shops to carefully check whether the banknotes are real.

How do you recognize counterfeit money?

The review of the security features is crucial to identify counterfeits. The Austrian National Bank recommends the "Feeling, seeing, tipping" method to determine the authenticity of euro banknotes. This method includes:

  • feel: raised lines on the edge and tangible features in writing and main motif can be seen.
  • see: watermark and safety thread should be visible in the light.
  • tilting: When the banknote tilts, the color of the emerald number changes, and the portrait, the main motif and the value number.
  • appear in the holograph.

The OENB provides important background knowledge about security features of the euro bargain certificates. These characteristics are a combination of national and new safety elements and enable a quick authenticity test. Corrects often tend to concentrate on just a few of these characteristics, which makes the review easier. For this reason, all consumers are advised to check several security features.

public initiatives and training courses

The OENB is obliged to retain banknotes and coins, according to the National Bank Act (§ 79). In addition, the National Bank offers training courses and information offers not only for banks, but also for trade companies and the tourism sector to deepen the knowledge of the security features. Such training courses are particularly important to point out cashier and trading staff.

In times when cash is increasingly in circulation, it is essential for each individual to refresh their own knowledge of the security features of the euro banknotes. Increased attention to these characteristics can prevent potential damage and restore trust in the means of payment. If everyone helps to recognize counterfeit money, the community can emerge strengthened from this situation.

If you want to know more about the security features and the recognition of counterfeit money, you can find on the websites of the Austrian National Bank and [Austria.gv.at] (https://www.oesterreich.gv.at/de/themen/eu_interational/leben_in_der_eu/der-euro/ page 2393007) Important information.
