Fire brigade workshop: Students learn fire fighting live in Lunz!

Lunz am See, Österreich - in Lunz am See recently there was an educational event for the students: inside of the 4th grades that visited the volunteer fire brigade. Organized by Mr. Obi Engelbert Sollböck, Ms. FM Eveline Sollböck and Mr. FM Christoph Pöchhacker, the young fire brigade enthusiasts were brought a lot about fire fighting and security. Among other things, they learned which dangerous symbols there are and how to act in an emergency in electrical current, which is particularly important in today's time when many deal with electronics.

The highlight of the event was a practice course in the attic of the fire brigade, which not only gave the children a deep insight into the work of the fire brigade, but also promoted practical experience. The demonstration of a fat fire was particularly impressive at the waste collection point, which impressively showed how important the correct extinguishing technique is. The practical part of the event was rounded off by each student being able to extinguish a petrol fire with a fire extinguisher. A great moment that was sure to make some eyes.

collaboration between the fire brigades

In the meantime, an important exercise by the volunteer fire brigade (FF) Ashausen and FF Scharmbeck also took place. On August 3, 2022, the two fire departments offered a joint exercise to fight fire, which began with an unclear smoke development in an agricultural hall. The operation was successfully ended in less than an hour after an extended fire with missing people was initially simulated.

The collaboration between the two teams was necessary to quickly build the water supply over a hydrant and a pond. Other vehicles were then even used during the exercise, which illustrates the effectiveness of mutual support. After the exercise, there was a debriefing in which important knowledge was reflected. Even the social moments were not neglected: with sausage or vegetarian meatballs and drinks, the day was relaxed and already spoke about future visits between the fire brigades.

A look at the fire brigade training

Fire brigade training plays a crucial role, and not only in terms of security, but also for the career of the firefighters. In addition to dealing with technology, rescue operations and teamwork, emergency situations and first aid are also important. Overall, the training lasts between one and three years and is crucial for personal and professional development. Physical fitness is also a central criterion to be able to act in the fire brigade.

The entry requirements are diverse: a secondary school leaving certificate and completed vocational training, for example as an emergency paramedic. In some regions, training is accepted without vocational training if there is a secondary school leaving certificate. The physical requirements that are checked by tests and examinations are also particularly important

Overall, firefighters can work in various services, including the professional fire brigade, whose entry salaries can be around 2,500 euros. The fire brigade not only proves that it ensures the safety of the population, but also offers a career with perspectives.
