Summer construction sites in Vienna: Stammrahrfrahr and diversions at all corners!

A summer full of construction sites awaits the drivers in Vienna. Extensive track renovations are currently taking place on the Carinthian ring and on Schwarzenbergplatz. This work, which lasts until August 5, have some changes: by July 1, only two lanes are available in the night between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. After that, only a limited traffic volume will be possible during the day. There are two lanes on the Carinthian ring during the day, while a road is blocked on Schwarzenbergplatz. There is an acute staupotial, which is why all users should best plan their trips to avoid the construction sites. The tram operation on the ring is temporarily stopped or redirected, which requires additional patience, reports the ÖAMTC.

Another focus is on the university ring, where the track renewal and an improvement in barrier-free entry and exit situation are due towards the end of July. Surprisingly, however, a lane remains continuously, even if one leads over the tracks. Interestingly, the last phase of work on the university ring is expected to end on August 24th. The Lorraine Road is also not spared by restrictions by the end of 2027, here the right lane between Schwarzenbergplatz and Canovagasse is blocked.

construction projects across Europe

The events are not only limited to Vienna. There are also extensive construction sites in Frankfurt that affect public transport and could extend the travel time of passengers. The VGF transport company is planning comprehensive modernizations of the subway and tram network in the second half of 2024. With an expansion of tracks, soft and driving current supply, the accessibility and reliability of the entire system should be improved. However, according to the VGF, these measures often require route closures in order to be able to guarantee security and punctuality, such as the Frankfurter Neue Presse reported.

In the German transport infrastructure, there is a great need for action. A recent study by the German Institute of Urban Studies shows that around 372 billion euros will be needed by 2030 to preserve and expand both the rail and street infrastructure. The condition of the transport infrastructure is worrying: a third of the streets on the traffic networks have adopted larger defects, and every second street bridge urgently needs a renovation. This underlines the urgency of modern transport networks for mobility, such as the ADAC emphasized.

In many cities, we are faced with the challenge of maintaining a good transport infrastructure in many cities. Whether in Vienna or Frankfurt, the upcoming construction work is a necessary evil to secure mobility in the future. It remains to be seen how much these changes will influence the everyday life of citizens. Good planning and timely information about changes are essential.
