Former Semmelweis Clinic will become a school for 480 students from 2026

A new chapter for the former Semmelweis Clinic in Vienna begins: From September 2026, the area, which served as an obstacle from 1943 to 2019, will be converted as a school location. The HLW17 is then moved to the Hockegasse after it has been located in Kalvarienberggasse. These are news that are important for both the educational landscape and for residents: inside.

The renovation of the former hospital site brings with it some exciting changes. Not only a new school location is created on an area of around 44,000 square meters, but also the administrative seat of the HLW17 is integrated into the old administration building of the clinic. The generally renovated "House 3" has been in use for school operations since 2012, and now there are further premises.

conversion and challenges

The new school building will offer space for up to 480 students. Modern learning rooms and spacious lounge areas for a total of 16 classes are planned. The entrance area will include an auditorium that also serves as a lounge. There is also space for practice rooms, kitchens and a dining room on the ground floor. You will find classrooms and IT halls on the upper floors.

A special highlight is the gymnasium, which was converted from a former car workshop. This has been completed since January 2025 and is already used by the students. In addition, a sports field is built on the roof. This makes the new school location not only a place of learning, but also of movement and compensation.

a piece of history

The Semmelweis Clinic has had a long story. The city of Vienna had sold the area to the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG) in 2020. Since then, the area has always been under discussion, since project developers, such as "increased" in 2019, have already secured buildings and parking spaces for the Amadeus International School Vienna. The conversions are made difficult by the resettlement of protected animal species such as bats and wall sailors, but the progress still shows that those responsible have a good hand.

What's next for the Semmelweisklinik? Preparations for the start of school in 2026 are already in full swing. The gymnasium could also be of interest to local sports clubs, as there is the possibility to rent it outside of school. This could prove to be good business for the district.
