Traffic chaos in Vienna: Massive locking and diversions in summer!
Especially on the way to work, many Viennese notice: inside the current changes in public transport. From today's June 11, 2025, the S-Bahn line S45 in Vienna will be interrupted in order to carry out urgently needed maintenance and modernization work. The extensive measures are divided into two phases and are expected to continue until June 23, 2025. In phase 1, the sections between Hernals and Handelskai are affected, while in phase 2 the route from Heiligenstadt to Handelskai is the focus. For both phases, rail replacement traffic is set up by buses that will stop at several stops, including Vienna Hernals, Gersthof and Heiligenstadt. This is reported by the ÖAMTC.
In a further step, the U4 between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke will be closed from June 28th. This work is planned for the period until August 31, 2025. During this phase, the U4 will only drive between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke as well as between Schottenring and Hütteldorf. Alternatives such as tram lines E4 and line D are planned for the affected lines to support travelers in the best possible way.

The summer months are all about modernizing public transport in Vienna. All planned blocks and construction work take place in a targeted manner during the school holidays in order to keep the impairments for passengers as low as possible. Between June 28th and September 1st, track work will also take place on the S-Bahn line between Floridsdorf and Praterstern, in which extensive replacement traffic is set up with two new bus lines. These measures are part of the "S-Bahn upgrade", which also includes the implementation of a digital train protection system in order to compact the clock of trains and enable passengers to travel better, as the city of Vienna notes on its press page.
Wiener lines will also carry out track work for several tram lines that are necessary during the U4 lock. Among other things, the U6 station Tscherttegasse is modernized, and from February 2026 the other platform will be closed. There is also a lock between Elterleinplatz and Schottenring on line 43, which lasts from June 16 to September 1st.

A highlight for the future are the new tram lines that will be put into operation from autumn 2025. Line 12 will then connect four districts, while line 27 will drive from Strebersdorf to the U2 station Aspern Nord. In addition, the existing line 18 will receive a direct connection between the 2nd and 3rd district, which is to be put into operation gradually from mid -2025.
With all of these measures, the city of Vienna not only pursues the goal of modernizing the infrastructures, but also making public transport attractive and future -proof.
