Nisselgasse: Remodeling remains behind expectations!

Nisselgasse, 1140 Wien, Österreich - In the 14th district, the redesign of Nisselgasse caused some positive, but also many negative surprises. The newly planned meeting zone should bring more green and less traffic, but reality looks different. Critics report a decline in sales in local companies, while residents complain about difficulties when accessing shops and services. The KURIER reports on the traffic situation and the problems that are still very present in the meeting zone.

The renovation measures in Nisselgasse were not completed until 2023, but business people already complain of a decrease in sales of 30 percent. The lack of charging zones and the difficulties in delivery of goods, especially medication, hit the entrepreneurs at the mind. Professional voices demand changes: Andreas Eisenbock from the ÖVP pointed out to the withered young trees and Elisabeth Kohl, chairwoman of the shopping street association, criticizes the lack of inclusion of business people in the planning phase, which has tightened the current problems, like that MeinDzirk reports.

traffic chaos in the meeting zone

Another big shortcoming in Nisselgasse are the numerous road users who significantly exceed the 20 km/h tempolimite. The district leader Michaela Schüchner (SPÖ) made it clear that a classic meeting zone is not possible due to traffic. In addition, the police regularly control speed violations, but there is no noticeable improvement in sight. A businessman reports difficulties to achieve his business and describes that the detour of the traffic during the renovation has brought additional stress into the situation.

A glimmer of hope could be the newly installed charging station in front of the "Café extraordinary", which is perceived positively. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense, since the holding options at the bus stops are partially construction sites, which are only to be completed at the end of the year. Schuchner is confident that the situation will improve after the construction site has been completed, but the patience of the residents and business people is put to the test.

green areas or profane traffic chaos?

The idea behind the redesign was to bring more green into the city and create a place of encounter. Young trees and flowers were planted, but questions about long -term care and the benefit of these measures arise. According to bpb.de, the traffic reversal must play a central role in urban development in order to create a city worth living.

In many cities, traffic projects are revised to achieve a balanced distribution between motorized and non-motorized traffic. Concepts such as "city worth living" or "15 minutes of city" are discussed in order to counteract the increasing volume of traffic. Safer roads and the creation of charging zones would also be urgently needed in Nisselgasse. The Penzinger Greens therefore propose Grätzelladenzones to solve the current misery.

Regardless of all attempts at optimization, the patience of the residents and business people does not have much time. It will be shown whether the Nisselgasse measures carried out and planned will really lead to an enrichment for the quarter or whether the traffic problem continues to put up with the everyday life of people.
