Heat wave about Vienna: tropical nights and the agony of the summer heat!
Ottakring, Österreich - The heat has been very busy in the past few weeks. In his experiences from Ottakring, editor Lukas Ipirotis describes how he wakes up at 28 degrees today and the high temperatures appear quite pleasant for him. A warm morning coffee tastes much more authentic when the apartment is just as tempered. But it gets uncomfortable when driving on the tram; The salty residues on the seats are a real annoyance. At work, he wears a two -shirt because the first is already soaked by sweat. In the evening he finds comfort on his yellowed mattress, even if he doesn't sleep really well at over 30 degrees.
But not only Ipirotis fights with the heat. According to uwz.at in the summer of 2024 with 53 tropical nights, those nights over 20 degrees are confronted. This makes the city a record holder - no wonder that life is unbearable for many at such high temperatures. The increasing humidity has also prevented the nightly cooling and achieved a record dew point.
gratifying among the tropical nights
In recent years, a worrying trend becomes visible. The long -standing series of measurements also shows an increase in tropy nights in Vienna. Compared to an average of 21 tropical nights between 1991 and 2020, this number has already been significantly exceeded in the heat year 2024. This is even reflected in other cities: Graz, Linz, St. Pölten and Eisenstadt also record new records.
For the future, however, there is hope for cooling, because although persistently high temperatures are forecast, as in the Kurier expect. According to forecasts, Klagenfurt could break the record of eleven heat days without a break next week, which makes it fear that this unbearable heat will become normal.
hot days and their consequences
climate change means that the number of hot days and tropical nights increases, while frost and ice days are less common. It is particularly worrying that the average values of the heat days in state capitals increase from 1991 to 2020. In Vienna, the average is 21 heat days per year - a sign that the Situation is increasingly exhausting.
As Ipirotis himself mentioned, people in this brooding heat only have to deal with their four -legged friends, such as the nominated pet of the year Scotty, a small Münsterländer. Scotty even helped his owner in a dangerous situation, which shows that heroic stories can also arise on hotter paths.
It is important not to ignore your own health. Tips from the Austrian Red Cross advise you to stay in your own home, drink enough water and keep an eye on the weather forecasts. In this heat it is better to stay inside and take advantage of the cool hours on the evening.
How will the weather develop in the coming weeks? One thing is certain: the discussion about our dealings with the heat - and climate change - is far from over.
