Stone throwing and threats: Patient ensures chaos in Clinic Landstrasse!

A terrifying incident occurred on July 10, 2025 when a 44-year-old man caused considerable unrest in front of the Clinic Landstrasse in Vienna. After his release from the psychiatric department, he strictly refused to leave the hospital grounds. According to Vienna.at The man was the medical staff by threatening.

The incident continued to escalate when the man threw stones on the clinic staff. Fortunately, everyone involved was unharmed, but several glass panes in the entrance area and windows of the building were damaged. The police were not long in coming and temporarily arrested the man. He is now accused of several charges, including deliberately tried serious bodily harm, dangerous threats and property damage.

background to violence against health personnel

Such incidents are not an isolated case, but part of a worrying trend in Austria and worldwide. Violence against health personnel is a growing problem, as the World Health Organization already found in 2002. Above all, people with mental illnesses are often involved in such violent acts, similar to patients with dementia or Alzheimer's, use the knowledge from various studies, such as Pflegenetz.at reports.

Several factors contribute to violence in healthcare: alcohol consumption, drug use, lack of personnel and long waiting times are some of the main causes. This not only leads to a tense work environment, but also has consequences for the health of employees, who are often physically and mentally affected.

measures and strategies

Various measures have been taken in Austria in recent years to better protect the clinic staff. A strategy bears the name "Dementia competence in the hospital" and is intended to ensure a patient -sensitive care. Nevertheless, internal surveys show that many hospitals do not adequately document or communicate the incidents of violence in order to avoid a bad reputation. Most reports often come from security forces, while the actual incidents are often not recorded.

A pilot study from an Austrian hospital between January and March 2020 showed that during the night only security personnel were present in the waiting area of the emergency room. Many employees reported on weekly to daily violent incidents, which are rarely officially reported. Often the employees are looking for support from colleagues instead of walking through registration systems.

The current events at the Landstrasse Clinic throws a light on the multi -layered problem. As the incident shows, it is extremely important to strengthen the security measures for medical staff. This is the only way to guarantee a safe and productive working environment.
