District Representation of Vienna-Landstrasse: Light, Shadow and Heat Property Solutions

District Representation of Vienna-Landstrasse: Light, Shadow and Heat Property Solutions
Landstraße, Österreich - On June 27, 2025, the first working meeting of the new district council took place in the Vienna-Landstrasse district, and there was a lot to discuss. District head Erich Hohenberger (SPÖ) opened the meeting on time at 4 p.m. and presented a list of 40 applications and 14 inquiries brought by the members. Many of the topics were about shadow and lighting, with the focus on climate change and its effects on urban development and heat protection.
The Greens made an inquiry about the degree of shading and the heat protection measures for vulnerable groups. This request met with lively approval, because climate change brings with it rising temperatures and extreme weather events that hit particularly endangered people such as children, older people and homeless people hard. Hohenberger referred to a comprehensive shadow study that is available to the Environmental Committee and which should serve as the basis for future measures.
climate adjustment and urban space
The requirements for urban planning increase: cities have to adapt to rising temperatures, droughts and heavy rain. According to the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB), urban development and construction must be rethought. Here, green infrastructures such as planting trees, the clearing of areas and creating shady "climate oases" play a central role here. These measures not only serve the well -being of the residents, but are also an effective remedy for the increasing heat load in urban rooms.
In the meeting, an inquiry about short -term rentals in the district remained unanswered, which would probably provide some discussions. In addition, Marco Niebauer (SPÖ), chairman of the building committee, reported on the speculation house in Löwengasse 40. For this building, a forced administration was requested in March, and the case is now in the court.
security and environmental concerns
An application from the ÖVP to improve security in the Cardinal Nagl Park was also heard and, despite concerns from KPÖ/left and the Greens, was accepted. In a further coordination, an application by the NEOS for cycling against the one -way in the lower Viaductgasse was rejected. In contrast, a proposal by the Greens was able to convince to introduce a 30-zone in Radetzkystrasse.
The unanimous acceptance of an application from the FPÖ for a security campaign entitled "Safe Cycling" and "Right Children's Transport" was particularly gratifying. Measures to improve traffic safety are essential in times of rising bicycle traffic and contribute to the general security of the population.
As the meetings and the current discussions show, it is clear that both the district council and urban planning must react to the challenges of climate change. It is high time not only to talk about the problems, but also to develop concrete solutions - whether through green infrastructure, security measures or through sensitization of the citizens. The future steps will be crucial to make the habitat in Vienna-Landstrasse future-proof.
In summary, it turns out that Vienna-Landstraße is on an exciting path of change, and the citizens: inside are called to actively participate in the design of their neighborhood. Who knows, maybe the next meeting will already bring new, further significant progress.Details | |
