100 years of Hanuschhof: A festival of history and social achievements!

Lechnerstraße 1–5, 1030 Wien, Österreich - On June 6, 2023, an important anniversary was celebrated in the heart of the country road: the Hanuschhof, an important residential project, was allowed to celebrate its 100th anniversary. District head Erich Hohenberger (SPÖ) took the celebrations as an opportunity to talk about the legacy of the namesake, Ferdinand Hanusch, and to honor the achievements of the workers' movement. The event at Lechnerstraße 1–5 offered those present not only delicious bread and cake, but also free drinks and an entertaining magic show that loosened up the mood.

What makes the heritage of Ferdinand Hanusch so special? He was not only a social democratic politician who was born on November 9, 1866 in Oberdorf (now Czech Republic), but also an advocate of social justice. After completing his training as a silk weaver, he joined the labor movement in 1891 and brought many groundbreaking reforms on the way, including the introduction of the eight -hour day and the establishment of the chamber for workers and employees. He worked tirelessly for the concerns of workers and employees, which made him a central figure of social care in Austria. Hanusch died on September 28, 1923 in Vienna, where his name and work remain alive to this day.

The history of the Hanuschhof

The Hanuschhof was built between 1923 and 1925 according to the plans of the architect Robert Oerley and now offers space for 501 apartments. The development of this building is not just an architectural, but above all a social certificate. The house was designed in such a way that it fed to the needs of the working -class families and is considered a showcase project of the time. Its design and functionality have shaped the character of the district for decades.

The anniversary celebrations framed a small exhibition that illuminated the historical background of the Hanuschhof and the role of Ferdinand Hanusch. An employee of the "residential partners" gave a moving speech that summarized the great challenges and achievements of the past 100 years. A look back at the development of social residential construction in Vienna was thrown, which was largely influenced by Hanusch's commitment.

a lasting legacy

Ferdinand Hanusch was not only active in the political field, but also as a writer. His works, such as "on the roller" and "Social Policy in New Austria", reflect on his human and combative attitude. His merits not only shaped social housing in Vienna, but also laid the foundations for modern social law, which serves as a model in many countries. In addition, today the "Hanusch Hospital" in Vienna 14 bears its name and is reminiscent of the constant achievements of its work.

The Hanushhof remains a place of memory and impetus for social innovations and improvements in residential construction in the 21st century. The celebrations for the 100-year-old were a welcome occasion to raise the values for which Ferdinand Hanusch fought.
