KPÖ denounces luxury ghett: colorful high -rise on Dresdner Straße!
The new high-rise at Dresdner Straße 90 has been completed in Vienna-Brigittenau. With around 260 apartments that extend over an impressive 80 meter height, this building quickly made a name for itself as a "colorful high -rise", thanks to its colorful balconies. But while the construction work has been completed, criticism is boiling. The KPÖ Brigittenau has sharp allegations against the high rental prices and demands more funded housing in the city. My district reports that the highest rental price for an apartment is almost 3,500 euros as "scandal" and the project itself referred to as "luxury ghetto".
Originally, the property was acquired by the city's own Arwag and Migra in 2013 with the promise to build mostly funded apartments. But the land was later sold to a private property developer and then to S+B Projektentwicklungs GmbH. In 2022 the US real estate group Graystar took over the project, which led to a controversial change procedure of the space dedication. The KPÖ is now calling for the creation of municipal buildings for affordable living space.
Criticism and opinion of the city government
The city government, represented by the press spokesman Stephan Grundei, rejects the allegations of the KPÖ. According to Grundei, the high -rise was planned as a private, freed -financed project from the start. The area was also rededicated in accordance with the applicable procedures. In addition, the subsidized apartments, as originally intended, were realized.
The latest developments, however, raise questions: A new draft of the area dedication plan, which is available for assessment at the end of last year after the construction block expired at the end of last year, stipulates that the area - with the exception of the ground floor zone for business areas - can be used without restrictions. While no residential use was planned in the original plan draft from December 2024, up to 24,000 m² of living space could now be created. This leads to speculation that there could be space for luxury apartments, offices and short-term tourist rentals in the new building, .
Vienna has long made a name for itself through a wise housing subsidy that is supposed to create high -quality and environmentally friendly living space. According to Wohnberatung Vienna , subsidized rental and cooperative apartments are used for new buildings, almost half of which are built as particularly cheap smart apartments. With its demand to increase the proportion of subsidized apartments to 100%, the KPÖ could come across fertile soil, especially in view of the income herself borders for subsidized rental apartments, which now also apply to larger households. As part of the existing housing subsidy, the question remains how the contradiction between new, expensive construction projects and the need for affordable living space for all Viennese: inside can be solved. It remains to be seen how the political discussion about residential construction will develop in the coming months. funded housing in Vienna
