Heinz Gappmayr: Anniversary exhibition celebrates visual poetry in Tyrol!
Schwaz, Österreich - in Schwaz is big: on July 4, 2025, an exhibition opens in honor of the Austrian artist Heinz Gappmayr, who saw the light of day exactly 100 years ago. The vernissage is accompanied by Melanie Wiener, the cultural department of the state of Tyrol, and Andreas Rudigier, the Tyrolean State Museums. The event location, the Rabalderhaus in Schwaz, is therefore the scene of an exciting retrospective via one of the defining heads of the concrete and visual poetry.
Heinz Gappmayr, who lived from 1925 to 2010, deeply shaped the art scene in Tyrol between 1965 and 1995. He translated language into art and put letters, numbers as well as graphic signs such as lines and points at the center of his work. The thematic reduction played a central role in contrasts, such as black and white, as well as categories such as place, time and space. These future -oriented approaches are now recognized in a comprehensive exhibition that makes the multitude of influences that Gappmayr had on national and international artists visible [Schwaz] that….

The Rabalderhaus not only houses Gappmayr's own works, but also art from other outstanding artists such as Hellmut Bruch, Thomas Feuerstein, and Eva Schlegel. In this way, visitors can research a little of Gappmayr's artistic vocabulary and his relationships within the art scene. In addition, comments and texts are presented that illustrate these connections and emphasize Gappmayr's influence on creative society.
A special highlight of the exhibition will be a choral plant by the composer Johannes Maria Staud, which is based on Gappmayr's texts and can be experienced via loudspeakers. You shouldn't miss that!

The exhibition in the Rabalderhaus and the further presentation as part of the “Ferdinandeum on the way” project shows from July 4 to September 28, 2025, on Thursday to Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Guided tours will take place on July 6, August 3 and September 14th at 5 p.m. On August 28th, an artist discussion at 7 p.m. will also offer the opportunity to immerse yourself deeper in Gappmayr's world.
In parallel to this large retrospective, an exhibition in the public space of Innsbruck is opened, which will be shown in the folk art museum, in the Zeughaus and Tyrol Panorama from July 3. Here the comprehensive work and the philosophical deep of Gappmayr is alive, and the audience is invited to experience the artistic counterpoints of his works [aut.cc] that….The Tyrolean Landesmuseen are actively involved in these events and are also responsible for the curatorial management of the exhibition, which is led by Florian Waldvogel. His goal? To adequately appreciate one of the most internationally important representatives of Austria's visual poetry.
Heinz Gappmayr may have already gone from us, but his art and influence are still alive and relevant.
