Great fire in East Tyrol: Fire brigade fights against flames and risk of smoke!

Nußdorf-Debant, Österreich - An alarming fire kept the waste management center in Nußdorf-Debant, East Tyrol, in suspense on Saturday afternoon. According to Puls24 the Tyrolean police were reported shortly before 1:30 p.m. Flames raged on a recycling facility, which led to the proclamation of the AT-OLERT in several communities: Nussdorf-Debant, Lienz-Stadt, Iselsberg-Stronach, Lavant, Tristach and Dölsach. The population was urgently asked to keep windows and doors closed to minimize health risks from the smoke.

Around 130 emergency services from seven fire departments are on site to combat the fire. Johann Obererlacher, the deputy district fire brigade commander, reported that a large pile of rubble has caught fire. The fire brigades focus on stabilizing the fire and preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings. As soon as the situation is stabilized, the fire with foam should be combated. The cause of the fire so far remains unclear what the situation is also tense.

Health risks from smoke development

experts warn of possible health consequences through massive smoke development, especially in the combustion of plastics and recycling materials. Children, older people and people with previous illnesses who can suffer serious respiratory problems are particularly at risk. The police also recommend restricting the outdoor stay to a necessary minimum in order to keep the health risks for the population really low.

Elmar Rizzoli, the head of the Tyrolean Center for Crisis and Disaster Management, informed about the ongoing observation of the situation and contact with the operational organizations. The incident is an example of how important crisis management and close cooperation between the authorities are in order to react quickly to such emergencies.
