Ancient games conquer Innsbruck: Children enthusiastic about the holiday train!

On July 5, 2025, the Innsbruck holiday train began with a colorful festival that took hundreds of children and adolescents into the world of antiquity. The Archaeological University Museum Innsbruck had set up a station on this day under the motto "Antique Games to participate" in the adventure area of the West of the DEF shopping center. Here the young visitors were able to dive into the world of children's toys, skill games and board games from antiquity in a playful way. Daniel Haumer and prospective archaeologists such as Lukas Dengg, Patrick Moser and Maria Todorovic were ready to guide the children through the ward. Even Mayor Johannes Anzengruber stopped by and joyfully participated in the games.

The Innsbruck holiday train, which has existed since 1988, is aimed at children and adolescents between 4 and 14 years and offers a varied program of sport, art, culture and nature. The Archaeological University Museum has contributed to the event series since 2014 and is pleased to be able to actively participate again in 2025.

diverse events in summer

A total of five events are offered this summer that enable the participants to learn more about antiquity:

  • "on archaeological excavation" (July 10th): Visiting an archaeological excavation.
  • "How did children and adolescents live in ancient Rome?" (July 16): A look at everyday life in Roman antiquity.
  • "The gods of Greece" (July 17th): getting to know gods, myths and heroes.
  • "In the traces of the Romans in Tyrol" (26.8.): Information about the life of the Romans in Tyrol.
  • "How do archaeologists work?"

The objectives of these events are to bring children and adolescents closer to the fascinating topic of antiquity and archeology at an early stage. The museum not only promotes the knowledge of the past, but also strengthens the contact between the university and the public.

a history -prone place

The Archaeological Museum Innsbruck, which is located in the impressive mountain backdrop of the city, can look back on a long history. Founded in 1869 as an imperial and kingsful plaster museum, it celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2019. The collection has grown from 40 to over 1,300 exhibits over the years and includes fascinating objects from the Minoian-Mycenaean period to late antiquity. Interactive workshops and regular guided tours make history alive and attract many cultural enthusiasts, while the museum actively participates in major national events.

One of the special challenges of the museum is the planned closure of the atrium and the back settlement to the Innrain. Nevertheless, those responsible work tirelessly to secure access to the collections for future generations and to combine the cultural heritage of antiquity with the present. Visitors can prepare for eventful offers that promise education and inspiration.

The fact that the link between past and the present remains so alive is not only shown in the events of the Innsbruck holiday train. The exhibitions and management concepts of the Archaeological Museum, which is an important part of the University of Innsbruck, also convey a lot about our history in a playful and informative way. In this way, the enthusiasm for antiquity will continue to be very popular in the future.
