Weiz, Österreich - What's going on in Weiz? At the BG/BRG Weiz, a particularly instructive workshop recently was on the program. Two committed FH professors and at the same time Young Science ambassadors, Andrea Knaus and Anna Waldner, took the time to give the 6th classes valuable insights into the economic cycle. The goal? To convey a practical understanding of economic relationships to the pupils, such as MeinDärzirk reported.
The topics of the workshop covered a wide range: from taxes to the processes when buying and selling. The Young Science initiative, which operates under the roof of the Federal Ministry of Women, Economic Affairs and Research (BMFWF), is committed to this order and promotes trust in science and democracy. In the past, around 360 school visits have already taken place in 2024, with around 520 research ambassadors actively participating, as the Young Science website explains.

The interactive approach of the workshop was particularly exciting. After a short Kahoot quiz to determine prior knowledge, Knaus explained the technical terms and relationships. A business game was the climax in which the students took over the roles of various institutions such as the state, production operations and consumers. Here they learned up close how money flows work in the economy: they produced, sold, consumed and paid their taxes.
The educational day was organized by the mathematics teachers Sabina Söllinger and Michael Wurzinger and lasted a total of four hours. Through playful learning, the young people should not only take on theoretical knowledge, but also gain practical experience in dealing with economic issues.The role of science ambassadors
The science ambassadors bring a breath of fresh air to school lessons. They combine current research topics with the teaching content and enable pupils to have direct contact with researchers. In addition to interactive workshops, the ambassadors report their experiences from research and answer questions that arouse the interest of the young people.
The initiative aims to establish the connection between school content, everyday phenomena and scientific research. With this form of knowledge transfer, awareness of science and its relevance in everyday life is strengthened, Young Science continues.
Finally, it is worth taking a look outside the box: various training courses, such as the e-learning courses of the National Institute for Science Communication (Nawik), offer scientists the opportunity to improve their communication skills. These courses not only help to optimize communication on social media, but also support in dealing with hostility on the Internet. One thing is clear: the time in which students only learn from books is over.
