Murtal earthquake: five times since the beginning of the month!

On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the earth in the Murtal district again lifted. The shock occurred around 1 p.m. in the Pöls-Oberkurzheim area and reached a magnitude of 2.9. According to the reports of Kleine Zeitung, some residents felt the shock, however, no damage was reported.

Interestingly, this was not the only earthquake in the region in the past few days. On Monday, July 14th, a slight quake with a thickness of 0.7 was already registered in Unzmarkt. On Tuesday there was another earthquake in the same place, this time with a thickness of 2.2. These seismic activities are part of a pattern of five earthquakes that have appeared in the Murtal since the beginning of the month.

earthquake statistics in Austria

earthquakes are by no means rare in Austria. Every year there are around 1,700 earthquakes, which mostly have small magnitudes. According to Volcano Discovery, a tremendous amount of strength 1.0 have been recorded in the last 24 hours, while a total of 15 earthquakes up to the strength of 2.8 have been registered in the last seven days. A quake over strength 2 could be recorded, the remaining 14 quakes were below.

The statistics show that in Austria on average around 138 quakes of strength 2 or higher occur. However, larger earthquakes are rather the exception: earthquakes of thickness 6 or higher are extremely rare in this country, with a rate of only 0.04 per year.

Current earthquake cards and information

If you want to find out more about current earthquake events, you can use the offers of the Geosphere. All earthquakes of the past 14 days are listed there and are marked on interactive cards. Events that were perceived by the population are particularly highlighted.

The detailed views of the earthquakes offer comprehensive information, including the exact stove time, coordinates and the nearest larger places. The Murtal region seems to be particularly active this year, so that the seismic activities should continue to be observed there. The sensitivity to such natural phenomena is high for residents, so it is important to remain well informed.

Overall, the earthquakes seem to have caused excitement in the region in the past few weeks, although the expectation remains that the situation will develop without any significant damage. Stay tuned and keep the current developments in the eye!
