Valuable insights: exhibition on food in Kapfenberg!
In the Kapfenberg cultural center, everything revolves around food. The exhibition "Life.Mitte.Wert." invites you to explore and think until July 20. This is not just about enjoyment, but also about the value and responsibility behind the production of food. The exhibition offers insights into agriculture and the variety of foods that enrich our tables.
In a total of eight themed towers and a media tower, visitors can learn a lot about plant growth, food purchase, nutrition and the processing of food inside. Producers have their say and share their perspectives and experiences. Interactive elements in particular invite young people between the ages of 10 and 15 to actively deal with these topics. Admission is free of charge from Monday to Friday and possible during the opening hours of the cultural center.
The important role of origin and sustainable consumption
The exhibition also explains how sustainable regional foods actually are. As the Albert Schweitzer Foundation reports, regional products are becoming increasingly popular because many people believe that they would reduce CO2 footprint. However, research, including from the Global Change Data Lab of the University of Oxford, shows that the origin of food has less influence on emissions itself. The largest CO2 emissions arise from land use and agricultural processes, and not through transport.
To reduce the CO2 footprint, it is advisable to consume more vegetable food. A study shows that beef causes an incredible 99 kg CO2 equivalent per kilogram, whereby the transport only contributes to 0.5 %. In comparison, foods such as potatoes or peas with only 0.46 kg and 0.98 kg are significantly more climate -friendly. The responsibility for sustainable consumption is primarily in the choice of food category.
food and environmental influences
Another important point is that not all regional products are automatically more environmentally friendly. For example, cultivation in greenhouses or intensive animal husbandry in the region can cause more emissions than imports themselves. Especially in the case of beef, which is obtained from cleared rainforest areas, the environmental consequences are devastating. Called areas can no longer act as CO₂ memory, which contributes to general global warming.
Overall, it shows that animal products usually have a larger CO2 footprint than plant food. So is it time to rethink our eating behavior? The exhibition "Life.Mitte.Wert." contributes to developing awareness of these topics and the responsibilities of consumers: to illuminate inside and producers.
Visit the exhibition and immerse yourself in the world of food, origin and the responsibility we wear for our planet!
