FH JOANNEUM: Kapfenberg becomes IT stronghold with a new competence center!

The FH Joanneum has launched an ambitious project that will result in a competence center for applied computer science by the end of 2026. The new head of the institute Wolfgang Granigg, who has been head of the course since 2017, takes over the management of the Institute for Software Design and Security. He succeeds Sonja Gögele, who will retire in July 2025. His new deputy Elmar Krainz also has plenty of experience and has been active at the FH Joanneum since 2007, where he is responsible for the Bachelor's degree programs.

Currently 350 students are registered at the institute, and the number of graduates is impressive: a total of 1384 alumni have already graduated. The courses include mobile software development, software design and cloud computing as well as IT and mobile security and many more. The offer is diverse and ranges from full-time to part-time models that are based on the needs of the labor market. Research is not neglected either. In particular, the Josef Ressel Center for Error forecast and the innovative security lab with hacking simulations stand out, which prepares future IT specialists for the challenges of the digital world.

With the Coin lighthouse project Radius, which includes a funding volume of over 1.7 million euros, the location of the location is further strengthened. The FH JOANNEUM thus receives an important thrust for its research projects. At the same time, a merger with the Institute for Economic Informatics and Data Science is planned, which is to be carried out in July 2026. This merger creates an interdisciplinary center of competence that will significantly improve teaching and research in the region. Granigg and Krainz are committed to a comprehensive development of the educational standards and the cooperation in the industry.

The FH JOANNEUM has set itself the task of being at the top of technical training, which is also reflected in the excellent job prospects for graduates: inside. "The demand for specialists in the areas of computer science and IT security is unbroken," said Granigg. This is how graduates can start a promising career in various industries such as business, health and public administration, be it as a data scientist or IT manager.

The students not only benefit from well-founded knowledge from the areas of programming and software engineering, but are also trained in practical applications that give them direct access to the requirements of the labor market.
