Helmi action day: make children strong for safety in road traffic!

Übelbach, Österreich - In Styria, an impressive day of action in Verßbach recently took place, which focused on the safety of children in road traffic. The Kuratorium for traffic safety (KFV) has devoted itself to the important topic of traffic safety. Under the motto "Open eyes, ears!" the children were introduced to the challenges in road traffic.

The event offered numerous adventure stations where the young participants played informative games, used creative handicrafts and painting and carried out interactive exercises. Led by the life -size mascot Helmi, which stands for safety in road traffic, the children were taught in a vivid way how they behave properly in road traffic.

The importance of traffic education

In Austria, the accident statistics from 2024 show that 3,070 children were injured in road traffic and there were four deaths to complain about. Peter Felber, a representative of the KFV, emphasized how important traffic safety actions are to protect children. He emphasized that traffic education should begin early to promote independence and social skills, because it is about the mediation of rules.

A look across the borders shows that there are similar challenges in Germany. In 2023, according to the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) 27,235 children in road traffic, whereby 44 of them died. Initiatives to improve traffic safety are therefore essential. The new campaigns, which, among other things, use Pumuckl as a likeable mascot, aim to bring important traffic rules closer to both children and parents through creative videos.

diverse programs for traffic education

Various programs for traffic education also offer organizations such as the adac . These programs, which are specially tailored to different age groups, take place directly in daycare centers and schools. For example, the “ADAC Verkehrschampions” offer aims at preschool age and offers practical training that are both informative and entertaining.

The safety in the car is also very important. Children up to 12 years and smaller than 150 cm must be secured in suitable child seats. According to the numbers from the BMDV, 99.5% of the children are secured, but only 35% are in the child seat. There is further need for information here.

The numerous events and programs offered in Austria and Germany impressively show that traffic education is a common concern. The constant sensitization of the little ones for the dangers in road traffic is crucial to reduce the number of accidents and to increase the safety of the children sustainably.
