Deutschlandsberg, Österreich - Christina Siegl, the Taglilien whisper from Stallhof

If you walk through Stallhof these days, you could come across Christine Siegl's impressive garden world. The 69-year-old maintains around 850 different types of daylilies (Hemerocallis) in her garden. "It is a passion that has been fulfilling me for years," says Siegl, whose enthusiasm for these blooming beauties began in 2004 after she had previously worked in the nursery Calovini. At that time she ordered her first rootstocks from Germany and repeatedly experimented with intersections to breed new, colorful varieties.

The care of daylilies is not child's play. "Taglils only bloom for a day, the flower falls together in the evening," explains Siegl. Therefore, careful control must take place every day. To pollinate the plants, it presses the flowers by hand. Another important ritual is to break the faded flowers that is necessary to keep the garden in good condition. She is supported in this intensive care by her husband Franz and her sons Thomas and Michael, who are always helping.

care and increase of taglilies

The flowering period of the daylilies extends from May to July, but this year the drought ensured that the flowers flourished smaller and showed less strong colors. "It's not quite as lavish as in other years, but I make the best of it," she says optimistically. After flowering, Siegl focuses on spring and autumn bloomers like daffodils and sun hat.

If you also want to dive into the world of daylilies, you can orient yourself on some care tips. Taglils thrive best at a full -sun or partially shaded location. The soil should be nutritious and permeable so that the plants are evenly supplied with moisture. "If the blooming is due to flowering, you should transplant or share it," says Siegl, referring to the importance of the division of the plant. Ideally, the sharing of ingrown hearts takes place in autumn or at the latest in spring, at least six weeks before the first frost.

A well -placed taglily also needs space - about 50 to 60 cm distance are recommended so that it can develop properly. The best neighbors include Rudbeckien, Sonnenbraut and Knights Sporne, which together in a colorful flower bed provide a real eye -catcher.

edible beauties

Did you know that all parts of the taglily are edible? The buds and flowers in particular are very popular in Chinese cuisine. You can use them raw in salads or blanch them briefly - a real pleasure for the senses! The frugal plants are hardy up to minus 35 degrees Celsius and do not require any special protective measures, only a little leaves or mulch on the rootstock can help.

For planning your own taglilia bed, the right time is now. With a little dedication and the right knowledge, your own garden can be transformed into a flowering paradise. Christine Siegl is the best example of the fact that passion and a good knack for plants can do real miracles.

The garden in Stallhof remains a place of inspiration for all flower lovers and shows that the world of taglily has far more to offer than you think at first glance. In this flowering oasis you can experience the diversity and beauty of nature up close.
