Young and old combined: warm encounters in the Kaprun senior house!
In the Margaretha senior house in Kaprun, a very special day took place on June 26, 2025. The final class 3BKB of the state vocational school Zell am See had organized a painting and craft morning under the motto "One day, two generations and infinite heart", which brought together both young and old. It was not only tinkered and painted, but also promoted a valuable exchange between the generations. "The goal was to bring the various life realities of children and seniors closer," explains project manager Rebecca Strolz.
The event has been planned intensively since the beginning of May, with the organization of Kimberly Hirschbichler and Jana Derigo actively supported. Teacher Stefan Gappmeier accompanied the entire project. "The mood was happy and relaxed from the start," said one of the participants. The children of the “House of Children” Kindergarten and the residents of the retirement home were able to shape creative flower pots with finger colors and have numerous conversations.
a warm cooperation
The feedback was consistently positive: "The fear of contact disappeared quickly," reports the student Jana Derigo. The children not only enjoyed the exchange with the seniors, but also a valuable personal experience. The contact between the generations is of great importance, especially in times when living alone for seniors becomes increasingly challenging. Often the contact with the younger generation is limited to short visits, so that such projects can make a decisive contribution to promoting understanding and consideration.
With such encounters, children and seniors have the opportunity to experience knowledge and experience transfer. While the older generations often grew up in war or post-war times, the children live in a much safer environment today. These differences in the life horizon were obvious in the conversations, which was enriching for both the children and the elderly.
an outlook in the future
The positive experiences during this project day have aroused the desire to repeat similar events in the future. The activities were supported by regional sponsors such as Holzbau Maier GmbH & Co. KG, Pinzgau Milch Production GmbH and the SWAighofer GmbH nursery, which provided materials and food. "We have proven a good hand here," comments Stillz, that this could be a first step towards many other generations.
cross -generational projects such as this are not only a valuable contribution to social integration, but also help to build solidarity and understanding between young and old. They offer seniors joy and distraction from everyday life and give the children the opportunity to learn from the experiences of older generations. After this successful day in Kaprun, we can be excited to see which new ideas the 3BKB of the Landesferschule Zell am See are planning next.
