Austrians love vacation in their own country: top destinations for 2025!

In the middle of the high summer temperatures, many Austrians are drawn to the distance or to the local bathing lakes. Now a current survey by the Austrian Hotel Association (ÖHV) shows that around 80 percent of those surveyed want to travel in the summer months. The domestic offers in particular are very popular.

The survey showed that 43 percent of Austrians even plan to travel twice or more often during the summer vacation. It is particularly noteworthy that more than half of the summer vacationers want to spend at least one vacation in their own country. The most popular federal states for vacation trips are Styria, Carinthia and Salzburg. With a share of 20.6 percent, Salzburg took third place in the most popular travel destinations in Austria. Not only can you enjoy the impressive Alpine landscape, but also a great leisure activities that ranges from active vacation to wellness to floating experiences.

Walter Veit, President of the ÖHV, emphasizes that our domestic businesses offer a strong overall package that is perfectly tailored to the needs of the guests. Especially at a time when traveling abroad seems more expensive, there is a clear trend towards vacation at home. The often valued domestic comfort and the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Austrian nature helps people like to stay with us.

In order to better understand the travel behavior of the Austrian resident population, the statistics Austria carried out a comprehensive survey. This includes the number and profile of the trips carried out both within the country and abroad. Factors such as the purpose of the travel, the choice of means of transport, travel establishment and the expenses of travelers are also recorded. In each survey, around 3,500 people are interviewed what makes the results particularly meaningful.

A look at the numbers

The results of these surveys not only have a high information value, but they also flow into the calculation of the travel balance and the tourism satellite account (TSA). This data is of great importance for the evaluation of the economic importance of tourism in Austria and serve as the basis for tourism policy decisions.
