Severe storms devastate Wels: Storm damage in Gunskirchen enormously!

On Monday afternoon, June 23, 2025, several violent storm fronts were discharged via Wels and Welsland. The extreme weather conditions led to considerable damage in the region. According to Meinbezirk.at The strongest wind speeds of up to 108 km/h in Schleißheim, Welsland district, were measured.

The fire brigade had to make around 150 missions throughout the state, with the municipality of Gunskirchen particularly affected. There the roof of the waste collection center was blown out of the gravel plant, and numerous roofs of residential buildings, agricultural buildings and companies suffered damage. Pool cover even started independently and landed in an adjacent garden, where it also caused damage.

damage and use of the fire brigade

In Gunskirchen, the fire brigade's forces were particularly challenged. Among other things, they secured the damaged roofs of a commercial property, in which provisionally planning had to be attached. In Wels, too, there were several missions to remove fallen trees from the streets and to secure damaged roofs. The Wels-Land fire brigade actively supported the missions in Wels.

The weather conditions also brought with it in other parts of Upper Austria, with a wind speed of 98 km/h in Kremsmünster and 91 km/h in Ostermiething, such as wt1.at reported. Exceptions to the violent storms were only available in the districts of Freistadt, Kirchdorf an der Krems, Perg and Rohrbach.

similar storm events in the past

violent storms with storm and hail damage are not new in the region. Information from the 2024 natural hazard report show that such events have repeatedly caused considerable damage since 1997. The statistical surveys collect data on the locations and times of storms that are of great importance for the insurance companies in order to be able to better assess the risks, see gdv.de .

The effects of today's thunderstorm on the infrastructure and the population are considerable. While the clean -up work has already started, it remains to be hoped that such weather conditions will not be repeated in the future. However, the emergency services are well prepared and have kept a good hand for such emergencies.
