Tens barracks in Ried: Modern command building opened for the Bundesheer

Ried im Innkreis, Österreich - What is happening in Ried im Innkreis? A significant innovation was carried out on July 1, 2025 when Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) ceremoniously handed over the key to the new command building in the tens barracks. With this handover, the Armed Forces marks an important step in the modernization of military facilities in Upper Austria. "A comprehensive concept is of central importance for the success of our soldiers," emphasized Tanner during the event. In addition to modern technology rooms, the new building also includes a kitchen and a dining room that offers space for up to 400 soldiers and employees. The project is supported by the "Building Plan 2032+", within the framework of which the Republic of Austria is investing over 80 million euros in the tens barracks, reports Meinzirk.at.

The freshly renovated command and farm building at Panzergrenadierbatalon 13 has an impressive usable area of 5240 square meters and offers everything important for the soldiers on three floors. "We met the budget and schedule," said Upper Austrian military commander Dieter Muhr, praising the successful progress in the barracks. Governor Thomas Stelzer also saw a significant improvement in the investment of the usefulness of the federal army and a securing of jobs in the Innviertel.

further developments in the tens barracks

The modernization in the tens barracks will continue in the future: in spring 2026 the general renovation of the accommodation buildings will start. In addition, the soldiers have reason to be happy-they can look forward to modernized Ulan shooter tanks. Another practical advantage is created by the newly planned track connection in the barracks, which facilitates the transport of tanks to the nearby train station. The old loading ramp at Rieder Bahnhof is thus superfluous, which significantly optimizes the logistical processes.

investments and defense planning

These measures are part of a comprehensive strengthening of the Federal Army, which is promoted by the new federal government from the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS. Planned investments of 42.7 million euros for 2026 and a total of 60 million euros for the years 2023 and 2024 aim to modernize the state defense in the context of geopolitical changes. The security strategy is adapted due to the current international situation, such as the Ukraine War, so that a gradual increase in the defense budget is sought to 2 % of GDP. The air forces should also experience a renewal: the Typhoon Eurofighter should be replaced by 2035 and new Leonardo jets and Sikorsky UH-60 transport helicopters will be added to the fleet, as reported.

The planned reforms and investments in the army mark one of the greatest modernizations in decades. Not only the material equipment of the troops is improved, but also the official conditions and salaries to win the best talents and increase the training standards. In addition, an increased focus is also on cyber security through the establishment of the Austrian Cyber Competence Center (AT3C) in order to counter digital change and the associated threats.

Overall, the development in the tens of barracks and the upcoming reforms of the Federal Army shows that Austria is willing to invest in security and defense ability and thus also convey a clear message to the population: We are ready to face the challenges of our time.
