Large river cleaning in Gmunden: Divers mount garbage from the Traun!

Gmunden, Österreich - In Gmunden, a large -scale cleaning of the Traun took place last weekend. 16 divers from several diving and sports clubs use their skills to free the flow of all kinds of rubbish. They were supported by boat crews and the fire brigade, which made the campaign a joint project that included several groups.

As part of this initiative, two Zillen from the Traunsee Fischerverein and an A-boat from the Gmunden fire brigade were used. Not only was most debris recovered, but important measures to maintain and develop the river section were also taken. Because water entertainment is essential to promote the ecological state of the waters and to ensure the safety of the water outflow, such as Aktion River explained.

unusual finds

The divers fished a number of unexpected objects from the depth of the Traun. Among other things, they came across shopping carts, armchairs, tires, advertising boards and even a toilet shell. Many of these objects were strongly overgrown with Draisena mussels, which indicates that they had been in the river for a long time. The severity of this finds made cleaning a physically demanding task for everyone involved.

The cooperation between the divers of diving sports Traunsee, the HSV Wels section and diving the EAG section was decisive for this. Thanks to the experience of their colleagues, young divers were able to learn a lot inside and are therefore well positioned for future activities.

support of the municipality

The municipality of Gmunden, together with the Austrian Federal Forest, took over sponsorship and disposal of the collected garbage. Such initiatives are important because they not only contribute to the cleanliness of the waters, but also promote awareness of the ecological concerns in the region. After all, the responsibility for the preservation and care of water is not only in the hands of associations, but also in the community, as in various parts of Austria, for example in Thuringia.

On the website of the vdst it is again emphasized how important it is to maintain and develop waters sustainably. The tasks and goals of the water maintenance associations are wide and extend to the securing of the water outflow to the promotion of the ecological functionality of the water.
