Glass fiber expansion in Matzen-Raggendorf: New internet for 1100 households!
The market town of Matzen-Raggendorf takes a big step towards the future: the expansion of a public fiber optic network has officially started. The Lower Austrian fiber optic infrastructure company (NÖGIG) will supply over 1,100 households and companies with modern internet connections. This was made possible by close cooperation between the municipality and the population, reports Meinbezirk.at .
The construction work started in July 2023 and the civil engineering is to be completed by the end of November 2025. Around 28 kilometers of fiber optic cables are laid, with a total volume of the project of 3.7 million euros. The first activation of the connections is planned for early 2026, the last should be ready for use by May 2026. Strabag was won as a general contractor for the expansion.a step into the digital future
MP Andreas Minnich and Mayor Alfred Redich recently emphasized the immense importance of this project not only for the quality of life of the citizens, but also for economic development in the region. The managing director of the Lower Austria, Reinhard Baumgartner, emphasized that fiber optic connections are particularly important for professional and educational purposes. In many communities in Lower Austria, especially in the hunched world and in the changing country, digitization is already being worked intensively. There, too, various infrastructure projects could be successfully implemented there, such as Bote-Aus-Buckligen-welt.at reported.
The foundation of the Lower Austria in 2014 was a direct reaction to the lack of interest in many companies in investments in new technologies. There has been space for innovations since then: around 43 million euros have now flowed into fiber optic expansion in the hunched world, and in rural areas, municipalities have also laid empty pipes for fiber optic together with water pipes in order to save costs. The eligibility of the infrastructure by up to 75 percent support ensures that even smaller communities can enjoy fast internet.
Why fiber optic is indispensable
In international comparison, Austria is not well there in fiber optic supply, which underlines the urgency of the project. From 2015, the costs and models for fiber optic expansion were tested in pilot regions. The expansion degree in rural areas is currently already around 90 percent, and 17 municipalities are involved in fiber optic expansion in the hunched world, with ten already active. The bandwidth requirement doubles every two years, which underlines the relevance of fiber optic internet for the future.
The advantages of fiber optic are clear: it offers stable connections, high speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s and enables symmetrical upload and download rates. The “Broadband Austria 2030” initiative provides for gigabit-capable connections to be provided nationwide by 2030 and repeatedly to support the need to support under-sized regions. The expansion is viewed as a foundation for the digital future of Austria, so that telemedicine and educational offers will also benefit, i-pac.at out.
The big goal is clear: fast internet for everyone in order not only to increase the quality of life, but also to create attractive prerequisites for company settlements and foundations. The fiber optic expansion interlinks rural development with the digital possibilities of tomorrow - and that is a step that will pay off.
